🔍 Job Summary

This role involves providing oral and written translations between English and designated languages (Haitian Creole and Spanish). The successful candidate will prepare and distribute translations for publications, forms, letters, announcements, and instructions to facilitate effective communication within the school community.

🎯 Essential Duties

  • Interprets spoken language from one language into another, using appropriate techniques such as consecutive or simultaneous interpretation.
  • Translates documents and materials, ensuring accuracy and clarity according to established rules for language, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Reviews and edits translations made by others, maintaining high standards of accuracy, readability, and style.
  • Serves as liaison between staff and the school community by verifying and clarifying translated information.
  • Conducts interpretation in person or via phone, assisting with inquiries, scheduling, registrations, and emergency calls for staff such as nurses, counselors, and teachers.
  • Interpret communications sent through automated call systems and engage in outreach activities to support Parents of English Learners (ELs).
  • Notify families regarding programs, services, and activities relevant to EL students.

🧠 Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Adherence to ethical standards regarding confidentiality and impartiality.
  • Ability to accurately interpret and translate between English and the designated language without altering the original meaning.
  • Proficiency in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and pronunciation in both languages.
  • Knowledge of regional idiomatic expressions, cultural differences, and customs.
  • Familiarity with technical, educational, and legal terminology.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to recognize and address the needs of non-English speaking students and parents.
  • Proficiency with software for document preparation and database access.
  • Comfort with using electronic equipment to broadcast voice to large audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and manage daily tasks effectively.

🎓 Requisite Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent; two years of college with at least 16 credits in English and/or the designated language are preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in simultaneous oral translation and document interpretation.
  • At least five (5) years of progressive multilingual experience with proficiency in the language.
  • Equivalents in training or a recognized interpreting program may substitute qualifications.
  • Certification as an interpreter/translator is required if not already obtained, with willingness to participate in certification programs.

  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity required for using phones and computers.
  • Visual and auditory acuity to read screens, printed materials, and understand speech.
  • Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds, bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.

🏫 Work Environment

Typically performed within school or office settings, with occasional field trips. The noise level is generally moderate.
