Characteristics of the Class
Under the supervision of the school principal, the teacher is responsible for delivering instruction, providing specialized services, and supporting students to develop their ability to effectively perform courses of study in English. The role includes maintaining discipline in assigned classes and performing related duties as required.
Essential Functions 📝
- Instructional Planning: Develop lesson plans and prepare instructional materials aligned with Chicago Public Schools’ policies, Illinois Learning Standards, and legal requirements. Administer language assessments to evaluate students’ language abilities.
- Student Assessment & Progress: Monitor and evaluate students’ progress and set goals within the bilingual program. Create engaging lesson plans using appropriate instructional techniques to help English language learners overcome participation barriers.
- Creating a Positive Learning Environment: Establish positive expectations, evaluate student progress, and maintain accurate records of achievements.
- Instructional Methods: Apply contemporary learning theories and teaching methodologies, utilize diverse instructional materials, and participate in developing new teaching techniques. Reflect current student work through bulletin boards and interest areas.
- Curriculum & Classroom Management: Demonstrate knowledge of subject content and instructional levels, promote student attendance, and implement anti-vandalism initiatives. Establish and uphold responsible rules of conduct, consistent with district policies.
- Recordkeeping & Student Support: Maintain attendance records, encourage self-discipline and positive self-concept, and foster respectful teacher-student relationships.
- Parent & Community Engagement: Conduct parent conferences, communicate student progress, and collaborate with school staff. May coordinate and attend field trips and extracurricular activities, utilizing community resources.
Minimum Qualifications ✅
Education and Experience
Successful completion of all student teaching requirements and coursework for an Illinois State Board of Education teaching license.
Licensure Requirements
Possession of an Illinois State Board of Education issued educator license with a bilingual endorsement relevant to the grade level.
