Position Overview

Note: This is an in-person role.

The Medical Interpreter will facilitate effective communication between clinicians and patients during face-to-face or telephone encounters, acting as a cultural liaison and ensuring accurate interpretation across medical and administrative settings.

Key Responsibilities

• Interpret between clinicians and patients during clinical and telephone encounters 🤝
• Serve as a liaison between patients and staff, providing cultural insights for Portuguese-speaking patients 🌍
• Translate patient information materials, consent forms, and other documents into Portuguese ✍️
• Edit translated materials for clarity and accuracy
• Identify opportunities for the hospital to better serve Portuguese-speaking communities, such as outreach and signage improvements 💡
• Explain the interpreter model to clinicians and patients 🗣️
• Assist in training staff interpreters and orienting patients to hospital services 🏥
• Coordinate and schedule freelance interpreters as needed 📅
• Assist with data entry, collection, and interpreter documentation 📝
• Support scheduling and confirming patient appointments ⏰
• Provide patient support outside of clinical appointments related to their hospital care 🤝
• Contribute to creating a welcoming environment for Portuguese-speaking patients 🌟

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Arts or comparable degree/experience 🎓
• Outstanding performance on Interpreter Assessment Evaluation ✅
• Proficiency in both oral and written bilingual (Portuguese/English) communication 💬
• Strong medical interpreting skills with an emphasis on accuracy and memory 🧠
• Knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology terminology in both languages 🩺
• Experience working in clinical interpreting environments 🏥
• Ability to collaborate effectively with clinicians and patients 🤝
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills 💖

Working Conditions

Compensation & Benefits

The hourly wage range for this position is $25.04 - $37.56. Actual pay depends on factors such as experience, education, certifications, and geographic location. Additional pay components like shift differentials, overtime, and call pay may apply, in accordance with law and organization policies.
