Role Summary
The Medical Support Specialist (MSS) is responsible for performing routine medical and testing procedures under the supervision of the treating clinician. This role also supports various facility operations, such as registration and referral management. It requires delivering efficient, accurate, one-on-one patient care while excelling in a fast-paced setting. The MSS ensures every patient receives quality clinical care and an excellent patient experience, supported by welcoming, respectful, and skilled colleagues.
Responsibilities
- 🚑 Perform Department of Transportation (DOT) and Non-DOT drug and alcohol testing
- 🩺 Prepare patients for physical examinations, including vital signs and ancillary tests (vaccines, injections, phlebotomy, PFTs, audiograms, respirator fit testing)
- 🔬 Conduct rapid screening tests (influenza, strep, mono, glucose, etc.)
- 🤝 Assist providers during examinations and treatments
- 📝 Perform routine medical procedures as ordered by the clinician and triage emergent patients as needed
- 🛠️ Prepare and assist with procedure set-up and injury care
- 🩹 Apply bandages, dressings, and splints as directed
- 💊 Dispense medications and DME in accordance with regulations
- ✅ Complete quality assurance activities for equipment and testing processes
- 🧹 Maintain supplies, and ensure cleanliness and organization in exam rooms and the facility
- 🛠️ Maintain and operate medical devices, including calibration and record keeping
- 🚨 Report equipment issues or supply needs immediately to supervision
- 👥 Support patient flow and volume management in partnership with center leadership
- 🕒 Keep patients informed about wait times during their visit
- 📃 Manage clerical tasks related to patient care and record accuracy
- 🤝 Greet patients, verify authorizations, check-in and check-out, answer phone calls, and distribute results
- 🔐 Follow HIPAA guidelines and safety protocols
- 👥 Attend staff meetings or huddles as required
- 🧼 Assist in maintaining a neat, clean, and orderly facility
- 🎓 Complete ongoing training, including clinical competency modules
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- 🎓 Vocational, Technical, or Business School certification in medical assisting preferred
- 🎓 Completion of an accredited medical assistant program with externship, or at least one year of patient care experience as a medical assistant
- 🎓 Military medical specialist experience meeting state credentials
- 🩺 At least six months of medical assistant experience is typical
Knowledge & Skills
- 📝 Familiarity with medical procedures and terminology
- ⚕️ Understanding of occupational medicine requirements (state-specific preferred)
