City of New York Is Hiring A Housing Assistant

Join the New York City Housing Authority as a Bilingual Housing Assistant in Brooklyn to support the Leased Housing Department’s Brooklyn Client Services Housing Navigation Unit. 🚀 Job Overview

The Housing Assistant will assist in managing voucher programs, reviewing applicant eligibility, conducting background checks, and ensuring smooth communication with Spanish-speaking clients and stakeholders. The role emphasizes independent judgment and provides significant opportunities to make impactful decisions.

🌟 Responsibilities

  • Maintain records: Record updates, case notes, and track progress for voucher holders.
  • Serve as primary contact: With property owners, case managers, and voucher recipients during eligibility and lease-up procedures.
  • Communicate in Spanish: Assist Spanish-speaking applicants, tenants, and stakeholders as needed.
  • Build relationships: Establish effective working relationships with internal teams and external partners.
  • Interview & review: Evaluate applicants’ eligibility for various voucher programs, including Tenant Based, VASH, Project-Based, and RAD.
  • Conduct background checks: Verify criminal, sex offender, and related backgrounds.
  • Briefings: Inform Project-Based applicants about program details.
  • Review & approve: Check documentation, update eligibility statuses, and process lease-up activities.
  • Data management: Create building profiles, units in Siebel, and prepare rental packages.
  • Compliance checks: Ensure rent reasonableness, review violations, and check banned owners.
  • Financial adjustments: Create and process payment adjustments.
  • Issue resolution: Address and resolve voucher holder queries and problems.
  • Coordinate external agencies: Expedite rental and eligibility processes through communication with outside organizations.
  • Operate system functions: Report issues and suggest improvements for operational efficiency.
  • Additional duties: Perform any other related tasks as assigned.

🎯 Qualifications & Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Baccalaureate degree, or
  • Experience: One year in housing management with at least 150 units, or
  • Alternative: 60 college credits + one year relevant experience, or
  • High School Diploma: Plus three years full-time housing experience.
  • Note: All candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

Foreign Language Requirement 💬

Proficiency in Spanish, demonstrated through an oral test, is required. Candidates must be fluent in Spanish to communicate effectively with clients and stakeholders.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) program and related HUD regulations.
  • Extensive experience with the Siebel database.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and other databases.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-up abilities.
  • Ability to foster effective relationships with colleagues, residents, and agencies.
  • Capacity to manage multiple priorities, analyze situations, and develop solutions.

📝 Additional Information

🔹 Special Programs: Open to qualified candidates through the 55-a Program and for NYCHA employees seeking transfers or promotions.

🔹 Pay Range: $45,435.00 – $73,638.00 annually.
