Hebrew Language at JLA


JLA welcomes students from diverse backgrounds who seek to deepen their understanding and appreciation of Judaism, regardless of prior experience or personal observance level. Our campus life and learning uphold Modern Orthodox standards and perspectives.

Curriculum & Immersive Experience

All students from 6th through 12th grade will take Hebrew twice weekly. Additionally, students in grades 9-12 will spend their first month of school in Israel, in partnership with Alexander Muss High School in Israel. This immersive month focuses exclusively on:

  • Hebrew Language
  • Tanach
  • Jewish History
  • Machshava
  • Zionism
  • Contemporary Israel

Student Diversity & Program Focus

Our students come from various backgrounds — some from Jewish Day Schools, others not; some from Hebrew-speaking homes, most not. Therefore, our Hebrew offerings are tailored to multiple proficiency levels.

The primary goal of our Hebrew program is to develop spoken language skills, adopting proven methods from the Ulpan model to enhance effectiveness. Despite varied backgrounds, admission is limited to students capable of Honors-level work or higher, ensuring rigorous coursework for all.

Responsibilities


  • Teaching Schedule: 20 periods per week — 5 periods daily, four days a week (Monday-Thursday).
  • Additional Roles: Advisory, media literacy, research, service learning, inspiration/ruach, or mentorship during our special Friday schedule.
  • Support: Tutorial sessions twice weekly.
  • Professional Development: Ongoing throughout the year.
  • Onboarding & Leadership: Special programming with students during the first 3 weeks of school.

Qualifications


  • Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience at the middle/upper school level, with strong pedagogical skills.
  • Fluent Hebrew speaker with deep language instruction expertise.
  • Advanced degree in a related field and/or education.
  • Experience working with gifted and talented students is an asset.

  • Proficiency with Google Workspace for Education and comfort with technology.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
