Sababa! Hebrew Immersion Day Camp
Our pioneering Hebrew immersion camp bridges Israel and Berkeley, blending traditional summer camp fun with language learning. It runs from June 23 to July 11 for rising K-4th graders, with mandatory staff training the week of June 16. The camp schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30am - 4:00pm, with extended care options available.
Position Summary
Camp counselors will:
- Engage children in daily activities within a Hebrew-rich environment 🗣️
- Know each camper by name and handle conflicts thoughtfully 🤝
- Collaborate with co-counselors to ensure a safe and smooth camp operation 🛡️
- Serve as positive role models for campers and staff 🌟
- Support the goals and spirit of the camp community
Lesson & Activity Planning
- Develop engaging lesson plans aligned with camp philosophy and vision 📝
- Supervise children from kindergarten to fifth grade, including planning & implementing developmental programming 🎨
- Set clear objectives for all activities 🎯
- Lead both structured and unstructured activities confidently
- Incorporate dynamic Hebrew language acquisition, asking descriptive questions to promote speaking and learning 💬
Student Support
- Be attentive to children's needs to support growth and curiosity 🌱
- Manage behavior appropriately, invoking disciplinary actions when necessary 🚦
General Responsibilities
- Model positivity and professionalism 🌟
- Contribute to program development and support camp goals 🤝
- Maintain organization and cleanliness during activities 🧹
- Communicate supply needs to administration 📞
- Participate in weekly staff meetings 📅
- Assist with walking trips to parks like Live Oak and Codornices 🏞️
- Supervise children actively at the King swimming pool, both in and out of the water 🏊♂️
- Maintain consistent attendance and professionalism throughout the camp season ⏰
- Avoid cell phone use during work hours, except in emergencies 📵
- Uphold the mission of JCC East Bay, embracing Jewish community values and traditions ✡️
Minimum Qualifications ✅
- Fluent Hebrew language skills 🗣️
- Rising high school senior or older 🎓
- Childcare or equivalent experience with kindergarten to 4th-grade children 🧸
- Ability to be outdoors in all weather conditions throughout camp days ☀️🌧️
- Excellent communication and organizational skills 🗂️
- Capacity to plan, organize, and implement tasks efficiently ⚙️
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team 🤝
- Physical ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds 💪
- Stamina to walk and stand for extended periods 🚶♀️
- Ability to sit on floors/chairs and quickly change position 🔄
- Flexibility to bend, maneuver, and assist children with toilet needs 🚻
- Quick responses to children's needs without delay ⚡
Salary Range 💰
Between $35,000 and $45,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
