Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced bilingual English and Japanese School Counselor for a full-time, on-campus role. The ideal candidate will provide counseling services, develop wellness curricula, and support our diverse school community. 📚🧠

Key Qualifications

  • Bilingual fluency in Japanese and English (spoken, read, and written) 🌐
  • Appropriate New York State Licensure/Certification (e.g., LMSW, LCSW, LMHC, etc.) 📝
  • Master’s degree or higher in School Counseling, Social Work, or related field 🎓
  • Experience providing individual and/or group counseling to adolescents 🧑‍🤝‍🧑
  • Proven ability to develop or lead wellness/SEL curricula 💡
  • Excellent communication skills 🗣️
  • Sense of humor and warm personality 😊
  • Proactive, flexible, developmentally sensitive, and steady in support 🧘‍♂️
  • Commitment to fostering independence, resilience, and self-awareness in students 💪
  • Ability to design programs supporting a diverse community 🌎
  • Familiarity with the social-emotional needs of Japanese students studying abroad (preferred) 🇯🇵
  • Experience in boarding or residential school settings (preferred) 🏫

Major Responsibilities

Counseling Services ☎️

  • Deliver individual and group counseling to students 🧑‍🤝‍🧑
  • Manage crisis interventions and emergency mental health support 🚑
  • Coordinate referrals to external mental health professionals 🔗
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff in both Japanese and English 🗣️
  • Collaborate with the Health Center to support student well-being 🩺
  • Support students through referral processes, including chaperoning as needed 🚶‍♂️
  • Conduct Counseling Orientation for new students during the Pre-Entry Program at the end of August 📝

Wellness Curriculum & Community Programming 🌱

  • Design and implement a school-wide wellness curriculum 🌟
  • Create workshops and resources focused on mental health, resilience, and well-being 🛠️
  • Develop culturally responsive content tailored to a boarding school environment 🌏
  • Collaborate with faculty to integrate wellness themes across programs 🎓
  • Evaluate and improve programming based on feedback 📝

School Duties 🏫

  • Participate in meetings, assemblies, and school events 🎉
  • Serve on committees and undertake roles assigned by the school 🧑‍💼
  • Adhere to Saturday/Sunday/Holiday duty schedules and perform related tasks as required 🗓️

Counseling Office Hours 🕗

  • Monday / Wednesday / Friday: 8:15 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Tuesday / Thursday: 8:15 AM – 6:00 PM

Weekend and evening emergency support available during school sessions. 🌙

Compensation & Benefits 💼

  • Salary: $55,000 - $75,000 (based on experience) 💰
