🔹 Job Summary

⚠️ Special Circumstances

  • The LNA is initially up to 60 months, but may be terminated at any time based on the Department’s needs, with 30 days' notice.
  • Assignments are made overseas at U.S. embassies or consulates, often completing a standard two-year tour of duty.
  • Post-first tour, candidates may be reassigned to different overseas locations.
  • Consular Fellows are full professional team members but do not have expedited or special access pathways into the Foreign Service.
  • Appointments do not guarantee employment beyond the initial term, but candidates may apply for Foreign Service Specialist or Officer roles, subject to qualifications and standard processes.
  • A minimum of 24 months of service is required before transitioning into the career Foreign Service.
  • Language-specific placements are primarily in Brazil (Portuguese) and China (Mandarin Chinese).
  • U.S. employees cannot be assigned to posts in countries of which they are nationals, and diplomatic privileges may not extend to family members of dual nationals.

Qualifications for Employment

  • U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain authorization to work abroad.
  • Ineligible if holding dual nationality in the country of assignment.
  • Ability to secure a Top-Secret Security Clearance.
  • Medical clearance for service abroad.
  • Favorable Suitability Review Panel determination.
  • Minimum age of 20 at application; 21 at appointment.
  • Must speak an eligible foreign language (Arabic, Chinese-Mandarin, Portuguese, or Spanish) at Level 2. Learn more.
