Job Summary

RWJBarnabas Health is looking for a dedicated Financial Counselor to assist patients and families in securing financial coverage for hospital services. This vital role contributes to the revenue cycle by explaining insurance benefits, outlining financial responsibilities, and informing patients about assistance programs like Medicaid and Charity Care. Acting as a patient advocate, you will collaborate with clinical, social work, and case management teams to facilitate access to care and ensure timely account resolution.

Key Responsibilities

• Verify insurance eligibility and benefits to guarantee financial clearance during care
• Identify payment sources, including commercial insurance, Medicaid, Charity Care, and self-pay options
• Screen patients for eligibility programs and submit applications promptly
• Generate financial estimates and collect point-of-service payments when applicable
• Educate patients and families on financial responsibilities, coverage options, and available resources
• Advocate for patients by addressing billing concerns, access issues, and service quality
• Collaborate with social workers and case managers to support discharge planning funding
• Maintain accurate and timely account updates related to coverage and assistance programs
• Research and resolve issues that could delay payments or account closure
• Support quality, productivity, and collection goals while prioritizing patient-centered service
• Partner across departments to facilitate efficient account resolution and revenue cycle management

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED (or completion within one year of hire)
• At least 4 years of hospital billing, accounting, or related healthcare financial experience
• Knowledge of Medicaid, Charity Care, uncompensated care, and insurance regulations
• Familiarity with medical terminology and insurance verification (preferred)
• Experience in hospital admissions or patient financial services (preferred)
• Strong attention to detail and computer proficiency
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish, Arabic, Creole, or Portuguese (preferred)

Scheduling Requirements

• Type: Full-time
• Locations: North, Central, and South
• Shifts: Various open days and evenings
• Rotating holidays required

Work Environment

This role is based within a hospital, involving direct interaction with patients, families, visitors, clinical staff, and hospital departments, emphasizing a patient-facing role.
