Role Overview

As a Persian Transcriber, you will convert audio recordings of native speakers into precise, conventionally formatted written transcripts. Your work supports speech recognition, dialogue systems, and AI evaluation tools for major research labs. The audio varies from studio-quality recordings to real-world conversational speech with regional accents.

This is expertise-driven work, not just data entry. Your decisions on orthography, code-switching, speaker attribution, disfluencies, and non-speech events directly influence the quality of AI models trained on your transcriptions.

Language Scope

• Primary dialect: Iranian Persian (Farsi) spoken in Iran
• Related varieties: Dari (Afghanistan), Tajik (Tajikistan)
• Project focus: Everyday Iranian speech with regional variation from regions including:
• Tehran
• Isfahan
• Mashhad
• Shiraz
• Tabriz
• Qom

What You Will Do 🎯

• Transcribe audio: Convert recordings into accurate, time-aligned text adhering to Perle's style guide
• Apply conventions: Use proper speaker labels, handle overlaps, disfluencies, fillers, false starts, and non-speech sounds like laughter or background noise
• Orthographic decisions: Make informed choices for dialectal, colloquial, and code-switched speech
• Flag issues: Mark ambiguous segments, uncertain speakers, and audio quality problems based on project standards
• Quality assurance: Review your work before submission to meet Perle's high-quality standards
• Collaborate: Engage with QA reviewers and participate in calibration sessions and style guide updates

Must Have 💡

• Native fluency in Iranian Persian, with significant residence or immersion in Iran
• High accuracy in reading and writing Perso-Arabic script
• Ability to distinguish Iranian Persian from Dari and Tajik in audio
• Knowledge of Arabic loanwords and colloquial Persian
• At least two years of professional transcription, captioning, court reporting, translation, or linguistic annotation experience
• Proven accuracy under deadline pressure
• Familiarity with web-based annotation tools and variable-speed playback
• Reliable internet, quality headphones, and a quiet workspace
• Capacity to meet weekly volume targets during active project phases

Nice to Have 🎖️

• Background in Iranian linguistics, translation, journalism, or media
• Experience annotating Persian speech data
• Knowledge of Arabic, Dari, or Tajik for cross-lingual understanding
• Familiarity with IPA or other phonetic transcription systems
• Experience with verbatim and clean-verbatim transcription conventions
