Exciting Leadership Opportunity: Director of Public Affairs in Italy 🇮🇹

As Incyte Italy embarks on a new growth phase, this role presents a unique chance to shape and lead the Public Affairs function, influencing the Italian healthcare landscape.

Overview

The Director, Public Affairs, Italy is responsible for designing and executing an integrated strategy spanning government affairs, communications, and patient advocacy to advance business objectives and market shaping. This senior leadership role demands a strategic thinker and hands-on leader capable of navigating a complex external environment, fostering stakeholder relationships, and translating insights into impactful actions.

Reporting directly to the Italy General Manager and dotted line to the Head of Public Affairs International, this position is a vital part of Incyte’s leadership team, elevating the company's reputation with policymakers, media, and patient communities.

Function Responsibilities

1. Strategy & Leadership 🎯

  • Define and lead an integrated Public Affairs strategy (government affairs, communications, patient advocacy) aligned with Italy’s business priorities.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the General Manager and leadership team on external environment, positioning, and reputation.
  • Identify opportunities and risks within healthcare, policy, and societal landscapes, translating them into actionable strategies.
  • Lead market shaping initiatives to ensure optimal access and positioning of Incyte’s portfolio.

2. Government Affairs & Policy 🏛️

  • Develop and implement a government affairs strategy, including stakeholder mapping and engagement priorities.
  • Build and sustain high-level relationships with national and regional policymakers, institutions, and trade associations.
  • Monitor and anticipate policy, regulatory, and legislative developments, providing strategic guidance.
  • Position Incyte as a credible and trusted partner in healthcare policy discussions.

3. Communications & Reputation 📢

  • Define and oversee corporate, brand, and external communication strategies.
  • Ensure impactful media engagement and visibility across channels—traditional, trade, and digital.
  • Lead corporate positioning, narrative development, and reputation management, including crisis communication preparedness.
  • Approve and oversee external communications materials.

4. Patient Advocacy & Partnerships 🤝

  • Design and implement a patient advocacy strategy, embedding patient-centricity across the organization.
  • Build strategic partnerships with patient organizations to drive shared objectives.
  • Deeply understand the patient and advocacy landscape in Italy, identifying collaboration opportunities.
  • Incorporate patient insights into business strategies and decision-making processes.

5. Cross-Functional Leadership & Execution ⚙️

  • Collaborate with Market Access, Medical, Commercial, and Legal/Compliance teams to ensure aligned external engagement efforts.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives, ensuring effective execution of Public Affairs plans.
  • Manage external agencies and partners to deliver high-quality outcomes.
  • Maintain compliance, ethics, and transparency in all external interactions.

6. External Representation & Influence 🌍

  • Represent Incyte at external forums, industry associations, and stakeholder engagements.
  • Build and nurture a strong network of influencers across policy, media, and patient communities.
  • Enhance Incyte’s visibility, credibility, and thought leadership within Italy.

Candidate Requirements ✅

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS); advanced degrees in science, health, or business preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in public affairs, government affairs, communications, or patient advocacy.
  • Strong network within the Italian healthcare ecosystem, including policymakers, institutions, media, and patient groups.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute strategies in complex environments.
  • Ability to influence senior stakeholders internally and externally.
  • Demonstrated leadership presence with an entrepreneurial, proactive mindset.
  • Experience in market shaping and reputation building initiatives.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively in matrix and international settings.
  • Strong commitment to ethics, compliance, and integrity.
  • Fluent in Italian and English.
