Caregiver / Home Care Aide - Cantonese Speaker

🔍 Summary

The Caregiver / Home Care Aide is responsible for delivering non-medical personal care, assistance with daily activities, companionship, supervision, and household support tailored to each client’s care plan and agency policies. They support clients in maintaining their independence, dignity, safety, comfort, and overall quality of life, while observing and reporting any changes in their condition or needs. Additionally, caregivers aid with social engagement and daily routines to help clients achieve optimal functioning.

Reports To: Administrator, Care Coordinator, Scheduling Coordinator, or other designated supervisor.

📝 Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Assist clients with activities of daily living (ADLs): Including bathing, grooming, oral hygiene, dressing, toileting, incontinence care, ambulation, transfers, repositioning, and helping with eating, as authorized by the care plan and applicable law.
  • Provide companionship and emotional support: Engage respectfully and professionally to promote social interaction.
  • Assist with mobility and transfers: Use safe body mechanics and approved techniques.
  • Meal preparation and feeding assistance: Prepare meals/snacks per client preferences and dietary needs, assisting with feeding as appropriate.
  • Perform light housekeeping: Tasks such as laundry, dishwashing, changing linens, organizing, and maintaining a safe environment.
  • Support physical activity: Assistance with walking, exercises, and other approved activities to promote strength and mobility.
  • Medication reminders: Remind clients to take medications in accordance with the care plan and agency policy. Caregivers do not administer medications unless legally authorized.
  • Accompany or transport clients: To appointments, errands, or community activities when assigned and authorized.
  • Observe and report: Any changes in physical or mental condition, behavior, environment, or overall wellbeing to supervisors promptly.
  • Adhere to care and service plans: Follow schedules, documentation, and all specific instructions.
  • Complete documentation: Ensure accurate care notes, timesheets, visit verification, incident reports, and other records by shift end or as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality: Protect personal and health information following agency policies and privacy laws.
  • Follow infection control protocols: Use universal precautions and safety procedures.
  • Prioritize safety: Implement fall prevention, emergency response, disaster preparedness, and report unsafe conditions.
  • Professional conduct: Interact respectfully with clients, families, colleagues, and the public; support a positive image of Guardians of Home Care.
  • Attend training: Participate in orientation, ongoing training, staff meetings, and other required sessions.
  • Maintain certifications: Keep current with registrations, clearances, health screenings, and certifications per California law and agency policies.
  • Report abuse or neglect: Notify authorities of any suspected abuse, neglect, or other reportable concerns involving elders or dependent adults.
  • Perform other duties: As assigned by supervisor or administrator.

🎓 Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum Age: At least 18 years old.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience: Prior caregiving, home care, or personal care experience preferred but not required.
  • Communication Skills: Proficient in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English to perform duties effectively and communicate with clients, families, and team members.
  • Reasoning Skills: Demonstrate sound judgment, patience, calmness, and appropriate responses to various client needs.
  • Equipment Used: Household items like washer, dryer, stove, microwave, vacuum, and mobility aids, as applicable.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, lift, push, and assist with mobility and personal care tasks safely.
  • Health Requirements: Meet health screening, TB testing, and other clearance standards per California law.
  • Personal Traits: Demonstrate honesty, reliability, professionalism, compassion, patience, good judgment, and respect.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Pass background checks.
    • Eligible for Home Care Aide registration in California, if applicable.
    • Complete all required training and orientation.
    • Maintain current certifications like First Aid and CPR, if mandated.
    • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and proof of auto insurance if driving is involved.

Provided in clients’ private homes, involving diverse environments and conditions. The caregiver may work with elderly, disabled, or clients with chronic, cognitive, or mobility-related conditions. Availability during weekends, evenings, holidays, or overnight shifts may be required based on client needs and assignments.
