Overview
Lynker, a trusted Federal Government Contractor, is seeking a talented Bilingual Research Meteorologist and Trainer for International Meteorology Desks, fluent in Spanish, to support long-term positions with NOAA. The role is based in College Park, MD, within the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP).
The NCWCP hosts several NOAA organizations, including the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) and Climate Prediction Center (CPC), and is located near the University of Maryland. The contractor will serve as a Training and Research Meteorologist in WPC's International Desks, supporting WMO Regions III & IV (Central/South America and the Caribbean).
In this capacity, you will collaborate with NOAA scientists, WMO, National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, and external partners to enhance forecast techniques and transition research into operational practice. You will also assist in forecaster training and share your research findings through peer-reviewed publications.
Focus areas include forecasting heavy precipitation with tropical cyclones, warm-season convection, atmospheric rivers, ensemble model output, probabilistic products, and the evolving role of weather forecasters.
Responsibilities
- Developing and administering forecaster training in Spanish and English 📚
- Collaborating with NOAA, academia, NMHS, and WMO partners 🧑🤝🧑
- Planning and conducting remote training sessions for WMO Regions III & IV 🌐
- Creating training materials to introduce new forecast tools and techniques 📝
- Performing additional related duties as assigned ⚙️
Qualifications
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in Spanish and English 🗣️
- MS or advanced degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related field 🎓
- At least one year of experience in operational meteorology or applied research 📊
- Extensive knowledge of weather forecasting, especially quantitative precipitation forecasting 🌧️
- Experience with Linux, programming (Python, Perl, R, Shell) 💻
- Experience in developing and managing meteorological training materials 📋
- Proficiency with meteorological software (ArcGIS, NCL, GEMPAK, etc.) 🖥️
- Strong analytical skills and knowledge of statistical methods in meteorology 📈
