Milton Hershey School, located in Hershey, PA, offers a no-cost, career-focused education to over 2,200 students from disadvantaged backgrounds, thanks to the generosity and vision of Milton and Catherine Hershey. We are now seeking dedicated married couples to serve as Full-Time Flex Houseparents, playing a vital role in shaping the lives of our students.

Founded in 1909, MHS has graduated over 12,000 students and continues to grow, providing a nurturing environment that promotes academic, emotional, and social development. The school is fully endowed, ensuring a sustainable future for its students.

Position Overview 🏡

As a Flex Houseparent, you and your spouse will reside in on-campus student homes, offering care, guidance, supervision, and support to groups of approximately 8–13 students. Your role is crucial in creating a structured, family-like environment that fosters students’ full potential.

Key Responsibilities 📝

  • Provide daily supervision and mentorship
  • Manage household routines and student schedules
  • Administer medications and promote student wellness
  • Drive students to activities and lead engaging developmental and recreational activities
  • Lead daily devotions and accompany students to Sunday Chapel services
  • Oversee household budgeting and reporting

Initially, Flex Houseparents support various student homes following a schedule of nine days on duty, followed by three days off. During weekdays, they have unscheduled time while students are in school. Eventually, they transition into a Placed Houseparent role, living and working with the same group of students in their own home.

  • Salary: $44,768 per person (approximate total of $168,000 per couple), including free housing, meals on duty, utilities, and more

Qualifications ✅

  • Experience working or volunteering with youth
  • Married for at least two years, with both spouses aged 27 or older
  • Residence with no more than three dependent children in the student home
  • Commitment to a smoke-free and weapon-free campus; alcohol use prohibited during duty
  • Pet restrictions: only fish and one breed-approved dog allowed
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and ability to become certified to drive student vans
  • Comfort leading students in daily devotions and attending Judeo-Christian Sunday Chapel services (proselytizing prohibited)
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and role model qualities
