The Medical Assistant (MA) plays a vital role within our clinical support team, working alongside Nursing Care Coordinators (NCC) and Patient Services Representatives (PSR) to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered primary and preventive care across all health conditions and settings within BCHC. Contributing to our mission to serve all residents of Berks County, the MA actively supports BCHC's status as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) and Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH).

Position Summary

The MA is responsible for executing clinical processes that help operationalize BCHC’s commitment to exceptional, accessible healthcare for everyone, regardless of economic status. Under the guidance of the NCC and Provider, the MA ensures seamless care coordination and supports each patient's journey through thorough preparation, communication, and clinical support activities.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Pre-Visit Preparation: Ensure complete and accurate preparation of patient charts in accordance with the Chart Prep Checklist.
  • Collect Diagnostic Results: Obtain and verify lab results, diagnostic imaging, screening tests, mammography, colon screenings, and PHQ-9 screenings since the last visit.
  • Patient Status Follow-Up: Determine recent ED visits or inpatient admissions and obtain discharge summaries when appropriate.
  • Family and Pediatric Care: Gather information from the last well-child visit.
  • Support During Patient Visits: Participate in all visits, update patient histories, review medications for reconciliation, and clarify any recent specialist visits or hospitalizations.
  • Patient Communication & Consent: Provide necessary treatment consent forms and ensure patients understand care instructions.
  • Self-Management & Preparation: Complete patient self-management goal sheets and ensure patients are appropriately clothed for examination.
  • Provider Support & Documentation: Communicate patient readiness, brief providers on significant issues, prepare forms, and document in the EMR.
  • Test and Medication Management: Record lab results, verify orders, and perform point-of-care testing (e.g., urine dips, blood glucose).
  • Patient Care Activities: Acquire vital signs, perform visual and audiology screenings, and administer vaccinations per provider orders.
  • Assistance & Coordination: Assist providers with procedures, arrange interpreter services, and support tracking activities for PCMH, Lab, and Imaging priorities.
  • Insurance & Appointment Coordination: Secure insurance authorizations and collaborate with PSR and NCC to facilitate appointment scheduling.
  • Team Engagement: Actively participate in BCHC’s clinical support team to foster a patient-centered medical experience.
