About the Role
TransPerfect Connect (TPC) is seeking highly fluent, professional bilingual speakers (English > Cantonese) to join our team. If you have experience using your language skills in a call center setting, this is your chance to launch a rewarding career as an Over-the-Phone Interpreter (OPI) and Video Remote Interpreter (VRI). Role Overview
Interpreters at TPC play a vital role in enabling accurate, culturally sensitive communication for limited-English speakers. This position demands professional-level command of both English and Cantonese, interpreting complex conversations swiftly and precisely. You will handle idiomatic expressions, specialized terminology, and emotionally nuanced content with professionalism and empathy.
Success depends on strong active listening, emotional control, professionalism, and adaptability, as you facilitate continuous live calls while adhering strictly to interpretation protocols ensuring neutrality, accuracy, and confidentiality. 🧠🔐
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consecutive interpretation services between English and Cantonese across various industries (medical, legal, customer service, etc.)
- Ensure complete accuracy, clarity, and neutrality, preserving tone, intent, and emotion
- Maintain confidentiality and impartiality at all times
- Manage call flow professionally, intervening respectfully when clarification is needed
- Demonstrate emotional intelligence, particularly in high-pressure or emotionally charged interactions
- Apply memory retention, active listening, and note-taking techniques to manage longer exchanges
- Stay within your role, avoiding personal opinions or advice
- Participate in ongoing training, coaching, and feedback sessions to improve performance
- Utilize basic computer tools (MS Office, internal platforms) to manage calls and logs effectively

Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (required); college degree preferred
- Fluency in English and Cantonese, with B2+ proficiency or higher
- Ability to pass language and interpreting skills assessments
- At least 6 months of call center, customer service, or interpreting experience
- Strong verbal communication, bilingual accuracy, and ethical decision-making skills
- Capability to think clearly and act professionally in fast-paced, emotionally complex situations
- Responsible, with good time management and integrity
- Comfortable asserting session control when necessary
- Basic computer skills, including typing and MS Office
- Quiet, distraction-free workspace for active listening
- Stable home internet connection (cable, DSL, or fiber); cellular data hotspots are not permitted
- Identity Qualification: Valid, government-issued photo ID required throughout the process. Failure to provide ID will disqualify candidates.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in medical, legal, or community interpreting (a strong plus)
- Experience with remote work tools and communication platforms

- Quiet, comfortable, and distraction-free environment
- Desktop or laptop computer (Windows or Mac) with ≥16GB RAM
- Broadband internet (minimum 30 Mbps download / 10 Mbps upload); no cellular data or hotspots
- Computer no older than 5 years with a functioning webcam
- Operating System: Windows 10+ or macOS Big Sur (OS 11)+
