Position Overview

TransPerfect Connect (TPC) is looking for highly fluent, professional bilingual speakers (English & Cantonese) with call center or interpreting experience. We provide comprehensive paid training to launch your career as an Over-the-Phone (OPI) and Video Remote Interpreter (VRI).

This role supports diverse industries including healthcare, legal, and financial services, allowing you to utilize your language skills to truly make an impact.

Interpreters at TPC play a crucial role by ensuring precise and culturally sensitive communication for limited-English speakers. Whether assisting during medical appointments or accessing essential services, your skills foster understanding and support real-world needs.

Ideal Candidate Profile

This is a structured, call center-style role requiring:

  • A professional command of both English and Cantonese
  • The ability to interpret complex conversations quickly and accurately
  • Experience handling idiomatic expressions, specialized terminology, and emotionally nuanced discussions
  • Strong active listening, emotional control, professionalism, and empathy
  • The capacity to manage live calls under pressure while maintaining neutrality and confidentiality

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide consecutive interpretation services across industries (medical, legal, customer service, etc.)
  • Ensure accuracy, clarity, and impartiality, preserving tone, intent, and emotion
  • Maintain confidentiality and neutrality at all times
  • Manage call flow professionally, intervening respectfully when clarification is needed
  • Demonstrate emotional intelligence during high-pressure or emotionally charged interactions
  • Apply active listening, note-taking, and memory retention techniques for longer exchanges
  • Stick strictly to the interpreter role, avoiding personal opinions or advice
  • Participate in ongoing training, coaching, and feedback sessions
  • Utilize basic computer tools (MS Office, internal platforms) to manage calls and logs

Qualifications & Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (college preferred)
  • Fluency in English & Cantonese (B2+ or higher)
  • Pass a language and interpreting skills assessment
  • At least 6 months experience in call center, customer service, or interpreting
  • Strong verbal communication and bilingual accuracy
  • Ability to think clearly and act professionally in dynamic, emotionally complex situations
  • Reliability, integrity, time management skills
  • Assertiveness and session control capabilities
  • Proficiency with basic computer skills (typing, MS Office)
  • Quiet workspace supporting active listening and concentration
  • Stable internet connection (cable, DSL, fiber; cellular data/hotspots not accepted)
  • Identity Qualification: Valid government-issued photo ID required throughout recruitment and training

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in medical, legal, or community interpreting is a strong plus
  • Experience with remote work tools and communication platforms
