The Role: Bilingual Interpreter (English > Cantonese) 🗣️

As an interpreter at TPC, you play a crucial role in bridging communication gaps, ensuring accuracy and cultural appropriateness for limited-English speakers. Your work supports vital services, from healthcare to legal and financial sectors, creating a meaningful impact in real-world situations.

This position involves a structured, call center-style environment requiring professional-level fluency in both English and Cantonese, capable of interpreting complex, emotionally nuanced conversations swiftly and accurately.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide interpretation: Facilitate communication between English and Cantonese across various industries (medical, legal, customer service, etc.)
  • Ensure accuracy: Preserve tone, intent, and emotion while maintaining neutrality and clarity
  • Maintain confidentiality and impartiality
  • Manage call flow: Professionally intervene for clarification when needed
  • Display emotional intelligence: Handle high-pressure or emotionally charged interactions with professionalism
  • Utilize active listening & note-taking: Manage longer exchanges effectively
  • Stay in role: Refrain from giving opinions or advice
  • Participate in ongoing training, coaching, and feedback
  • Use basic computer tools: Log activity and manage calls using MS Office and internal platforms

Required Qualifications ✅

  • High school diploma or equivalent (college preferred)
  • Fluent in English and Cantonese (B2+ proficiency or higher)
  • Ability to pass language and interpreting skills assessments
  • Minimum 6 months of call center, customer service, or interpreting experience
  • Strong verbal communication and bilingual accuracy
  • Professional mindset to handle fast-paced, emotionally complex situations
  • Integrity, time management, and professional responsibility
  • Comfort with assertive communication and controlling sessions
  • Basic computer skills, including typing and MS Office navigation
  • Quiet, distraction-free workspace for active listening
  • Stable internet connection (cable, DSL, fiber preferred; cellular not permitted)
  • Valid government-issued ID for verification throughout the process

Preferred Qualifications 🌟

  • Certification in medical, legal, or community interpreting (a strong plus)
  • Experience with remote work tools and communication platforms
