Position: Structures Foreman

Location: Tidewater Area of Virginia (Chesapeake, Norfolk, Newport News), including Wallops Island.

Note: Bilingual skills in Spanish and English are required.

Role Summary

The Structures Foreman supervises and coordinates activities of construction workers engaged in building, installing, and repairing roads, bridges, and related structures. This role ensures projects are completed safely, on time, and within specifications.

Key Responsibilities 🛠️

• Review documents and plans to clarify questions before starting work.
• Examine blueprints and profiles to determine structural dimensions and alignments.
• Work from surveyor’s layouts, determining line and grade as needed.
• Direct and train crew members according to contract drawings and specifications within budget.
• Act as OSHA-defined "competent person" on site.
• Select appropriate materials ensuring compliance with project standards.
• Plan ahead to ensure timely availability of materials.
• Coordinate project activities with Superintendents and Engineers using two-week schedules.
• Assign tasks like operating machinery, constructing forms, and laying pipe.
• Inspect subcontractor work for quality and compliance.
• Supervise building of structures such as cofferdams and support excavations.
• Estimate worker hours based on production schedules.
• Maintain crew contact list and know team members by name.
• Conduct daily safety "Huddles" to brief crew and train newcomers.
• Enforce safety regulations and PPE use.
• Adjust work procedures to meet deadlines and improve efficiency.
• Evaluate work problems, suggest solutions, and motivate team members.
• Maintain detailed time and production records.
• Prepare and document weekly safety meetings.
• Perform current crew activities to ensure project continuity.
• Minimize punch list items and ensure proper completion of work.

Supervisory Responsibilities 👥

The Foreman manages 1 Lead Person overseeing 2-3 employees, and directly supervises 3-5 non-supervisory staff. Responsibilities include training, assigning, performance evaluation, discipline, and resolving issues following company policies and legal standards.

Qualifications & Skills 📋

Education & Experience

• Minimum of five years relevant construction experience or training.

Technical Skills

• Experience in bridge and roadway structures required.
• Ability to interpret safety rules, manuals, and technical documents.
• Proficiency in writing reports and verbal communication.

Mathematical & Reasoning Skills

• Capable of basic arithmetic, ratios, and percentages.
• Apply common sense to implement instructions and solve work-related problems involving multiple variables.

Physical & Work Environment Demands 🏗️

• Regularly stand, walk, handle tools, reach, climb, stoop, and talk.
• Frequently lift/move up to 50 pounds and work on uneven surfaces.
• Visual acuity required includes near, far, peripheral, and depth perception.
• Outdoor work in varying weather conditions, including exposure to fumes, noise, and heights.

Benefits & Compensation 💼

Kokosing offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, life, and disability insurance, paid time off, and a 401K plan. The anticipated hourly pay range is $33 - $45+, contingent upon experience, education, and qualifications.
