Job Overview

At Cal-Wood, our mission is to foster positive nature experiences, especially for those who haven't yet explored the mountains. Since 1982, we've provided environmental and outdoor education programs on our 1,200-acre outdoor campus near Boulder, Colorado. Through school programs, summer camps, and family events, we aim to make nature accessible and welcoming to everyone, regardless of background or language.

Our dedicated field instructors receive specialized training in sheltered instruction and inclusive teaching methods, promoting engaging, hands-on science education in the field.

Position Details

Position: Bilingual Field Instructor (Spanish-English)
Location: Colorado wilderness (bilingual support for Spanish-speaking students)
Start Date: August 10, 2026
End Date: May 28, 2027
Type: Seasonal, full-time
Salary: Exempt, based on experience

Program Responsibilities

  • Teaching (75%):
    • Lead small groups of 10-15 students during visits lasting 2-3 days in the mountains of Colorado
    • Develop, deliver, and assess environmental science lessons aligned with curriculum standards
    • Integrate science, math, history, art, and team-building activities into programs
    • Support English, Spanish, and multilingual groups using sheltered teaching methods
  • Support (25%):
    • Facilitate engaging activities like games, songs, skits, storytelling, and campfires
    • Assist with meal support and evening programs such as night hikes or campfires
    • Help translate curriculum materials into Spanish
    • Maintain program areas, organize educational resources, and support staff needs

Schedule & Work Environment

Our team typically works Monday through Friday, averaging 40 hours per week, with some evening and weekend shifts based on program needs. Programs may include early mornings, evenings, and overnight activities (note: instructors do not sleep in cabins with students). During trips, instructors work fully outdoors across all seasons in the Colorado mountains.

Qualifications & Qualities

  • Bilingual proficiency: Spanish and English ☀️
  • Inclusive mindset: Support underrepresented communities and diverse learners ✨
  • Personal motivation, flexibility, responsibility, and a positive attitude
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, natural resources, education, or related fields
  • Minimum one year of teaching experience, especially with children and Spanish-speaking populations
  • Ability to work effectively with a small, passionate team of 10-15 staff members
  • Comfortable living in a small mountain town (housing available if desired)
  • Ability to hike 3 miles a day, lift up to 50 lbs, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Willingness to learn sheltered teaching methods via on-the-job training
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification required; Wilderness First Aid/Responder certifications a plus
  • Ability to pass background and motor vehicle checks
