Overview
The Department of Modern Language and Comparative Literature at Baruch College of the City University of New York invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in Sephardic Studies. The appointment begins in Fall 2026.
Position Focus
We seek a scholar whose research and teaching engage with the history, cultures, languages, and/or literatures of Sephardic Jews in Latin America. We welcome applicants incorporating innovative methodologies and engaging with transnational, diasporic, or comparative frameworks.
Candidate Qualifications
- Strong research agenda and potential for scholarly excellence
- Commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching
- Ability to contribute to our core curriculum
- Capability to teach courses in Comparative Literature and Jewish Studies
- Affiliation with the Wasserman Jewish Studies Center expected
Responsibilities
- Maintain an active research agenda and publish within your expertise
- Teach a standard load of undergraduate and graduate courses (18 units/year), barring reassignment
- Advise and mentor students across all levels
- Participate in curriculum development and departmental service
- Engage in the intellectual life of the department and university through lectures, workshops, and collaborative research
- Contribute to the mission of the Wasserman Jewish Studies Center
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in a relevant field by August 2026
- Evidence of potential for high-quality scholarship in Sephardic and/or Latin American studies
- Proven or potential aptitude for effective teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels
- Dedication to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in languages such as Ladino, Hebrew, Spanish, Portuguese
- Experience in administration within a Jewish Studies Center
- Research in Holocaust and/or Antisemitism Studies
Compensation & Benefits
The salary range for this position is $86,741 - $102,017, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
