The Iowa International Center is seeking experienced in-person Arabic interpreters to help bridge language gaps and promote cultural understanding in Central Iowa.

Position Overview

We are currently looking for Arabic interpretation professionals to assist with connecting Limited English Speakers (LES) to vital programs, services, and professionals across Central Iowa. This role involves in-person interpretation, working closely with the Global Languages Manager.

Qualifications & Requirements ✅

• Fluency: Native or near-native level in Arabic and English
• Cultural Mediation: Ability to explain cultural concepts to prevent miscommunication and act as a cultural broker
• Professional Skills: Capacity to concentrate, stay neutral and objective, and follow client instructions carefully
• Ethical Understanding: Knowledge of interpreting best practices, code of ethics, and principles of consecutive interpretation
• Adaptability & Inclusion: Emphasis on cultural competency and promoting inclusion during interpretation
• Listening Skills: Excellent retention and accuracy skills
• Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with terminology, ongoing study of glossaries, scripts, and training materials provided by clients

Job Details

• Type: Independent contractor for consecutive interpretation
• Schedule: As-needed basis, typically Monday to Friday, with occasional evenings or weekends
• Location: On-site at various locations in Central Iowa—including schools, health centers, businesses, manufacturing sites, and conferences; some interpretation may be via phone or video
• Reports To: Senior Interpretation Program Coordinator
• Compensation: Minimum $35/hour, commensurate with skills and experience
• Education: High school diploma or equivalent experience required
