Join our dynamic Korean language program as an adjunct instructor for face-to-face teaching of first- and second-year courses. Our program, launched in 2023, is rapidly expanding, offering a unique opportunity to shape curriculum and engage students in a vibrant learning environment. 🌟
Position Overview
This is a face-to-face teaching position responsible for instructing one or two sections per semester. The successful candidate will receive support from our Language Coordinator but should possess prior experience with Korean pedagogy, curriculum design, and a degree of self-reliance due to the program's new and evolving nature.
Program Details
- Courses are flipped, communicative, and active-learning-based.
- Cultural competence is essential, including navigating diversity and gender-neutral language within the target culture.
- Instructors will teach one or two sessions physically in the classroom; specific days and times are negotiable.
- First-year courses are offered in a hybrid format, with an additional one-hour weekly service at the Center for Languages required for instructors.
Compensation & Status
The position offers $1,056 per instructional unit. It is a pooled position, with applications reviewed as needed. Please note:
- Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.
- Adjunct appointments are semester-specific with no guaranteed renewal.
- Official transcripts are required within 30 days for selected candidates.
- A criminal background check will be conducted if K–12 students are enrolled in classes.
Responsibilities
- Familiarize yourself with and adhere to college policies, prioritizing interactions with colleagues, staff, and students.
- Maintain professional communication and etiquette.
- Provide prompt and constructive feedback on assignments.
- Return graded work timely, maintaining accurate attendance and grade records.
- Perform evaluations of student performance and inform students of their progress periodically.
- Assign grades by the specified deadlines.
- Help foster a safe, respectful classroom environment.
- Report inappropriate student behavior through incident reports as per college policies.
Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications
- Education: M.A. or Ph.D. in Korean language-related fields such as literature, linguistics, or culture, or a related language degree.
- Language Proficiency: Native or near-native fluency in Korean and English.
- Teaching Experience: At least two years of college-level instruction in beginning and intermediate language courses.
- Pedagogical Skills: Training in foreign language teaching methodologies, best practices, and experience with Canvas or similar LMS platforms.
- Additional Knowledge: Familiarity with decolonial studies, gender-neutral language, and cultural studies related to Brazil.
- Teaching Modes: Experience or interest in online or livestream teaching in addition to in-person instruction.
- Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate across diverse cultural and social backgrounds, fostering positive relationships in a college setting.
