Department Summary

Our World Languages & Literatures Department features highly qualified, international, accomplished faculty committed to preparing students for success in an increasingly multicultural and multilingual global society. We actively promote study abroad, student organizations, and support the development of language and cultural literacy at San José State University.
We offer minors, B.A., M.A., and single subject teaching credential programs across a variety of world languages.

Brief Description of Duties 📚

  • Teach undergraduate courses from introductory to advanced levels in foreign languages, including upper-division literature or linguistics based on qualifications and departmental needs.
  • Hold regular office hours and collaborate with staff, chair, and colleagues to support student success.
  • Participate in course assessment activities and address the needs of a diverse student population distinguished by age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language, and academic readiness.
  • Implement inclusive teaching strategies and advisement to accommodate students' varied backgrounds and abilities.
  • Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Ensure all classes are scheduled and held as planned throughout the semester, in modes such as asynchronous, synchronous, hybrid, or in-person, as listed in the schedule.

Required Qualifications 🎓

  • Master’s (M.A.), Doctorate (Ph.D.), or equivalent in a language, literature, or related field other than English.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in the language of instruction and English.
  • Strong teaching skills with training or experience in second language pedagogy and technology-enhanced language learning.
  • Experience teaching the following languages: Chinese, French, German, Greek (classical), Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Persian/Farsi, Portuguese, Spanish, Tagalog/Filipino, Vietnamese.
  • Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity toward the educational goals of a multicultural student body through cross-cultural study, training, or teaching experiences.

Compensation 💼

Salary ranges are determined by qualifications and experience. Refer to University Policy S21-2 for details.

Anticipated Starting Salary:

  • L-A / Range 2: $5,507 - $5,959
  • L-B / Range 3: $6,221 - $7,481
  • L-C / Range 4: $6,825 - $9,431
  • L-D / Range 5: $8,593 - $10,347

Note: Salaries are monthly rates for full-time academic-year faculty; part-time rates are prorated. Salary payments are made over 6 months per semester.
