Salary Information

  • Hicksville Public Library: $40,000 - $50,000
  • Salary varies depending on jurisdiction.

Job Duties

Assist with routine typing and clerical tasks involving standardized procedures. Perform related duties as required to ensure smooth administrative operations.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following qualifications by the closing date:

  • Graduation from high school, or
  • Two years of satisfactory clerical experience, including typing.

In-Person and Office Application Filing

Computers are available at our office located at 40 Main Street, 2nd Floor, Hempstead, NY, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, for electronic applications. In our effort to go paperless, no hard copy applications are issued.

Application Fees & Waivers

  • A non-refundable processing fee is required for each exam applied for, payable via credit or debit card.
  • Fee Waivers: Available for unemployed individuals supporting a household, Medicaid or SSI recipients, those receiving Public Assistance, or eligible through a client agency. Active military and veterans are exempt.

To request a fee waiver, follow prompts during the application process and submit the necessary documentation as instructed.

Special Test Accommodations

If you have a temporary or permanent disability or need alternative arrangements due to religious or military commitments, indicate "yes" on the application to arrange accommodations.

Additional Credits and Special Considerations

Refer to Item No. 6 of the General Information for credits applicable to veterans and children or siblings of firefighters/police officers under Civil Service Law sections 85A/85B. Declare your eligibility accordingly in your application.

Examination Overview

The exam comprises a written test assessing:

  • Spelling: Ability to spell words used in written business communication.
  • Alphabetizing: Filing and sorting in alphabetical order.
  • Record Keeping: Performing common record management tasks.
  • Clerical Operations: Comparing, checking, and counting letters and numbers.

Typing Assessment

Effective June 2021, typing proficiency will be tested during probation. Candidates must demonstrate acceptable speed and accuracy. Failure to do so may result in termination during probation.
