About FDD & Its Mission

The Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) is committed to engaging in the worldwide war of ideas against terrorism and militant Islamism. Founded shortly after 9/11 by visionary philanthropists and policymakers, FDD specializes in policy research, investigative journalism, strategic communications, and education in democracy and counterterrorism.

FDD's Internship Program

Located in downtown Washington, D.C., our internship program offers a dynamic environment where interns can:

  • Participate in a twice-monthly speaker series featuring high-level DC officials and senior staff.
  • Work closely with senior staff to build on academic skills.
  • Receive assistance in earning academic credit (if applicable).

Note: All internships are unpaid. For Spring 2026, FDD will offer both hybrid and remote internship options.

The Turkey Program Internship

FDD seeks a full-time or part-time intern to work with our Turkey team, including Non-Resident Senior Fellow Sinan Ciddi. The role involves researching Ankara's domestic, security, and foreign policies, as well as regional influence. Previous research experience and proficiency in Turkish are required; knowledge of additional Eastern Mediterranean and Middle Eastern languages (Arabic, Armenian, Greek, Hebrew, Kurdish, Persian) is a plus.

Eligibility Criteria

  • GPA of at least 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Relevant coursework in fields such as International Relations, Security Studies, History, Communications, Journalism, International Economics, Political Science, STEM.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, with basic Excel skills.
  • Availability to commit at least 22 hours per week.
  • Legal eligibility to work in the United States.
