Bilingual Education Teacher

Characteristics of the Class

Under the supervision of the school principal, this role involves providing instruction, specialized services, and support to students aimed at enhancing their ability to effectively perform courses of study in English. The teacher will also discipline students within the assigned classes and perform related duties as required.

Essential Functions

  • Instructional Planning: Develop lesson plans and prepare instructional materials tailored to each student's needs, aligned with program objectives, CPS policies, Illinois Learning Standards, and legal requirements.
  • Assessment & Evaluation: Administer tests and language assessments to evaluate students' language abilities; assess progress and set goals within the bilingual program.
  • Instruction Delivery: Create and deliver engaging lessons using effective instructional techniques suitable for limited English proficient students, overcoming barriers to participation.
  • Classroom Environment: Establish positive learning expectations, maintain accurate records of student achievements, and apply contemporary teaching methodologies.
  • Curriculum & Materials: Exhibit knowledge of curriculum content, utilize diverse instructional materials, and contribute to developing new teaching strategies.
  • Student Engagement: Promote attendance, anti-vandalism, and good behavior; maintain responsible rules of conduct in all school areas.
  • Student Growth & Discipline: Support self-discipline and self-esteem, ensure fairness, and respect for students.
  • Parent & Community Relations: Communicate regularly with parents/guardians, arrange conferences, and provide guidance on academic progress, attendance, and behavior.
  • Professional Development & Extra Activities: Participate in staff meetings, in-service training, and coordinate class field trips or extracurricular activities.
  • Community Resources: Utilize community resources effectively to enrich student learning experiences.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience 🎓

Successful completion of all student teaching components and coursework required to obtain an Illinois State Board of Education teaching license.

Licensure Requirements 📄

Must hold an Illinois State Board of Education-issued educator license with a bilingual endorsement appropriate for the grade level being taught.

Knowledge, Abilities & Skills 🤹‍♂️

  • Strong knowledge of subject matter in accordance with certification standards
  • Familiarity with contemporary teaching principles and classroom management techniques
  • Ability to modify instruction to meet diverse student needs
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and community members to develop and implement effective instruction
  • Capacity to understand and respond to students' physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development
  • Proficiency in applying current educational methodologies and resources
