University of Pittsburgh Is Hiring A Teaching Assistant Professor

The Less-Commonly-Taught-Languages Center at the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Linguistics is seeking a dedicated and experienced non-tenure-stream Teaching Assistant Professor of Arabic to develop and instruct Arabic language courses and related programs at the undergraduate level. This role offers a dynamic opportunity to contribute to language education and cultural understanding in a vibrant academic environment.

Position Details

  • Location: University of Pittsburgh, Department of Linguistics
  • Duration: Initial 2-year appointment, 9 months per year, from August 15, 2026 to May 15, 2028
  • Starting Date: Fall term classes commence on August 24, 2026
  • Schedule: In-person classes expected
  • Renewal: Possibility after initial appointment

Key Responsibilities

The successful appointee will:

  • Design and teach an 18-credit Arabic language curriculum and related undergraduate courses
  • Create engaging curriculum materials to enhance student learning
  • Advise students and support their academic progress
  • Participate actively in Less-Commonly-Taught Language Center events and other initiatives that promote the Arabic program
  • Complete required university, school, and department training
  • Support departmental and university committees to advance institutional goals

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (or foreign equivalent) in Arabic Language Pedagogy, Linguistics, Foreign Language Pedagogy, or a related field
  • At least 6 years of college-level Arabic teaching experience
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Arabic (speaking and writing) and strong English language skills
  • Proven excellence in teaching and a deep understanding of Arabic-speaking cultures

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching courses on Arabic language structure
  • ACTFL-OPI and ACTFL-ILR certification as a tester
  • Knowledge of integrating AI technology in Arabic language instruction
