Job Summary
This role involves providing students with meaningful learning activities and experiences aimed at maximizing their potential across various domains. The teacher will support students in developing essential competencies and skills for successful societal participation.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Demonstrates current, accurate, and comprehensive knowledge of curriculum topics and state Standards of Learning; prepares students to master grade-level standards.
- Plans engaging instruction with clear curriculum objectives, learning activities, and lesson plans for both students and substitutes; teaches at designated locations and times.
- Utilizes current school and division data to inform daily and long-range instructional planning.
- Selects and develops comprehensive materials and technological resources tailored to students’ abilities and needs.
- Prepares for classes adequately, with written evidence available upon supervisor’s request.
- Links current content with past and future learning to ensure cohesive understanding; actively engages all students.
- Communicates key learning goals, concepts, and procedures clearly and effectively.
- Implements diverse instructional strategies that foster active student learning and meet diverse needs.
- Models the effective use of technology to enhance instruction and student engagement.
- Creates equitable opportunities for participation and accommodates individual differences.
- Provides timely feedback to students and parents to promote student progress.
- Applies a variety of assessment strategies to measure student achievement accurately.
- Maintains detailed records of student performance and attendance; manages time efficiently.
- Builds and maintains rapport with students, fostering a positive classroom environment.
- Ensures the classroom environment is safe, welcoming, and conducive to learning.
- Establishes and maintains high standards of behavior using positive reinforcement and constructive discipline.
- Maintains a professional demeanor and adheres to ethical standards; builds respectful relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Engages in ongoing professional development to enhance teaching practices.
- Participates in staff meetings, committees, and completes evaluations and record-keeping tasks as required.
- Contributes to the school and professional community through service activities.
- Communicates effectively and collaborates with administrators, colleagues, and families.

- Performs other duties as assigned by administration.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, with appropriate certification for teaching assignment.
- Possession or eligibility for a teacher license from the Virginia Department of Education.
- Ability to work under the guidance of building administrators and within division policies.
- Knowledge of VDOE and WJCC curriculum standards and integration techniques.
- Proficiency in incorporating technology into instructional practices.
- Effective collaboration skills with administrators, colleagues, students, parents, and the community.
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
Supervision & Support
- Supervises: Students and may oversee teacher assistants or volunteers.
- Receives Supervision: Under the direction of building administrators and support from Curriculum or Team Leaders.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
This position involves complex duties requiring a high level of adaptability and teamwork. Activities include standing, walking, moving, climbing, bending, kneeling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling. The schedule may include meetings outside regular hours. The role requires significant physical activity to maintain an active classroom environment.
