📝 Job Overview

The Teacher is responsible for planning, designing, implementing, and assessing a comprehensive instructional program within a high school setting. This role involves guiding a diverse group of students across all levels to achieve their academic goals.

  • Designing meaningful learning experiences
  • Monitoring student progress and communicating with parents
  • Developing assessments and classroom expectations
  • Collaborating with school administration for assessment preparation
  • Supporting students outside the classroom, including hallways, field trips, and after-school activities

At the high school level, the Teacher works with students from ninth to twelfth grade, facilitating their transition from adolescence to young adulthood and preparing them for life beyond high school. The environment promoted is challenging, equitable, empowering, and responsive to developmental needs.

The role also entails building on middle school fundamentals, motivating students, and creating engaging, rigorous, and relevant learning experiences through various curriculum pathways.

🎯 Roles and Responsibilities

  • Establish a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment fostering student agency, ownership, and reflection
  • Design and implement authentic learning experiences aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning, LCPS curriculum, and effective instructional strategies
  • Utilize a variety of resources and technology to promote critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
  • Personalize instruction to meet individual student needs and optimize learning time
  • Assess student growth relative to educational goals
  • Follow LCPS Assessment and Grading policies and guidelines
  • Analyze assessment data to improve teaching strategies and student outcomes
  • Communicate regularly with students and guardians about progress towards instructional objectives
  • Manage classroom behavior to create a productive learning environment and assist in behavior management school-wide
  • Collaborate with professional staff to enhance instructional opportunities
  • Support colleagues, students, parents, and community stakeholders in promoting student mastery of content and skills
  • Lead or coordinate efforts with teacher assistants, student teachers, and volunteers when appropriate
  • Participate in professional learning communities to deepen curriculum understanding and develop effective assessment tools

🎓 Qualifications

Candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college
  • Valid or eligible Virginia teaching license with endorsement in the relevant subject area
  • Comprehensive knowledge of subject content, curriculum design, and effective teaching methodologies
  • Ability to incorporate current research and educational theory into instruction
  • Proficiency in multimedia and computer technologies to enhance learning experiences
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish effective relationships with students, colleagues, and parents
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
