Job Overview
B’nai Jeshurun is looking for part-time creative and dedicated educators to teach in our Hebrew School program, Kadima@BJ. We seek enthusiastic, knowledgeable individuals to fill the role of Substitute Teacher. You will partner with us in making Judaism relevant and exciting for students and their families.
Program Highlights:
- Focus on tefillah, spirituality, music, and community 🎶🕯️
- Meetings on Tuesdays from 4:00–6:00 PM 🗓️
- Arrive between 3:40–3:45 PM to prepare classrooms 🧳
- Expect to leave after cleanup and classroom return procedures 🧹
Reporting & Supervision
Teachers report to the Associate Director of Family Life and Learning.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist lead and assistant teachers with curriculum delivery, classroom preparations, and supplies management 🎨✏️
- Support a positive Jewish role model environment for students ✡️
- Fill in as a lead or assistant teacher as needed
- Work with students in Kindergarten through 6th grade 🧒👦
- Implement lesson plans and projects collaboratively with your grade team
- Teach through hands-on, art-based, experiential approaches 🖍️
- Deliver Judaic content aligned with pre-planned curriculum units 📖
- Provide individual support to help students thrive
- Maintain a safe, healthy environment for learning 🌱
- Attend staff orientation before working with students
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- Strong Jewish knowledge and background ✡️
- Experience working with children (Kindergarten–6th grade) through various settings such as teaching, camp, or babysitting 🧸
- Patience and flexibility 🕰️
- Ability to build meaningful relationships with students and staff 🤝
- Availability on Tuesdays from 3:40–6:10 PM, from September 9 through May 12 📅
- Attendance at staff orientation on August 26th at 3:00 PM
Compensation & Benefits 💰
We offer a competitive hourly rate, staff orientation, mentoring, and a collaborative work environment.
This part-time, contract position is scheduled as needed, offering $40/hour for approximately 2.25–2.5 hours of work each Tuesday.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
Teachers must be able to travel to B’nai Jeshurun at 270 West 89th Street, New York, NY 10024. Expect activities such as stooping, bending, reaching, carrying supplies, and sitting or standing for extended periods.
