Department Overview
Multiple positions are available; schedules will be determined at the time of interview. The Language Access Specialist provides objective and accurate interpretation and translation services to patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). Under the guidance of the Interpreter Services Manager, this role supports the healthcare team by helping patients navigate the healthcare system and connect with resources. Specialists also offer consultation and cultural insights to stakeholders across the healthcare spectrum.
The role extends beyond mere translation—professional interpreters serve as conduits, ensuring accurate messaging, preserving the patient-provider relationship, and articulating cultural influences.🌍
Function & Duties of the Position
🔹 Language Interpretation Services
- Facilitate interpretation between patients, staff, and healthcare professionals via phone, video, and in-person, maintaining friendly and professional communication.
- Analyze spoken messages and re-express them faithfully within cultural and social contexts.
- Serve as a cultural and linguistic resource to improve patient and provider outcomes.
🔹 Language Translation Services
- Translate written documents, including medical records, educational materials, and correspondence, ensuring the original meaning and style are preserved.
🔹 Consulting & Education Services
- Collaborate with medical staff to promote effective communication strategies for non-English speaking patients.
- Advise management on best practices for working with LEP populations.
- Educate staff and faculty on cultural awareness, interpreter use, and LEP patient care.
🔹 Patient Services
- Assist patients in locating internal and external health resources imperative for their care.
- Partner with departments to ensure equitable access and participation for LEP patients.
🔹 Documentation
- Accurately record interpretation and translation encounters, maintaining logs for billing and compliance.
- Adhere to all organizational policies including immunizations, TB screenings, and timekeeping deadlines.
🔹 Professional Contribution
- Maintain professionalism aligned with OHSU’s Code of Conduct and ethics standards.
- Engage in continuous professional development through memberships and research.
- Participate in training, meetings, and uphold a safe, respectful work environment.
🔹 Customer Service
- Deliver prompt, courteous, and efficient service, utilizing judgment to resolve issues and improve experiences.
🔹 Confidentiality & Miscellaneous
- Uphold strict confidentiality of all sensitive information.
- Support departmental projects as directed by the Interpreter Services Manager.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
- Minimum of five years of professional interpreting experience, with three in healthcare settings
- Fluent bilingual proficiency in English and designated language
- In-depth understanding of interpreting principles, medical terminology, and cultural nuances
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- National certification from NBCMI or CCHI (within 6 months of hire) or qualification through Oregon Health Care Interpreter Program
- Knowledge of NCICH Code of Ethics
- Ability to perform essential functions with or without accommodations
Preferred Qualifications 👍
- American Translators Association (ATA) Certification
Additional Details 📌
Pay Range: $29.96 - $40.50/hour (dependent on experience and internal equity)
While performing duties, the employee must speak and hear effectively and navigate the Marquam Hill campus and South Waterfront—accessible with or without reasonable accommodations.
