The Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan’s largest daily newspaper with a circulation of over 5 million, is seeking a dedicated professional to support our Washington-based news operations and coverage of U.S. politics and international affairs.

Qualifications & Skills 🎓

• Applicants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree
• Background in US politics, international relations, foreign policy, economics, or journalism is preferred
• Attention to accuracy and effective multitasking under deadlines
• Strong work ethic and ability to develop and maintain reliable sources
• Ability to take direction and collaborate effectively
• Japanese language skills are preferred but not required

Job Description & Responsibilities 📝

The main duties include:

• Assisting Washington-based Japanese correspondents by attending video conferences, briefings, and press conferences
• Tracking news stories relevant to our coverage
• Arranging and conducting interviews
• Drafting clear and concise memos on issues of interest
• Covering events such as those held by local think tanks and Congress
• Reporting on campaign rallies and related events, especially with the mid-term elections in 2026 📅
• Rapid and precise transcription of discussions and interviews

Additional responsibilities may include coverage of:

• The White House 🏛️
• State Department
• Department of Defense
• Department of Treasury
• Commerce, USTR, and Federal Reserve Board (FRB)
• Other news areas as needed

Note: This position currently has no byline or article-writing duties.

Work Schedule & Compensation ⏰💼

• Must be willing to work occasional weekends and overtime
• Due to current events in Iran, additional overtime may be required
• Opportunities for domestic travel
• Compensation includes salary, overtime pay, as well as medical/dental benefits and a 401(k)
