Role Overview: Interpreter at TPC

Interpreters at TPC are crucial in facilitating accurate, culturally sensitive communication for limited-English speakers. Whether assisting during medical appointments or helping access essential services, your proficiency in English and Cantonese contributes to real-world, positive outcomes. This is a structured, call center-style position requiring professional-level interpretation, including complex conversations with speed and accuracy.

Ideal candidates demonstrate:

  • Fluency in English and Cantonese (B2+ or higher)
  • Ability to interpret idiomatic expressions, specialized terminology (medical, legal, financial), and emotionally nuanced content
  • Strong active listening, emotional control, professionalism, empathy, and adaptability
  • Capacity to manage live calls under pressure while following interpretation protocols

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide consecutive interpretation services between English and Cantonese across diverse industries (medical, legal, customer service, etc.)
  • Ensure accuracy, clarity, and neutrality in all interpretations, preserving tone, intent, and emotion
  • Maintain confidentiality and impartiality at all times
  • Manage call flow professionally, including respectful clarification interventions
  • Show emotional intelligence during high-pressure or emotionally charged interactions
  • Utilize memory retention and note-taking techniques to support longer exchanges
  • Stay within the interpreter's role, avoiding personal opinions or advice
  • Participate in ongoing training and coaching to continually improve performance
  • Use basic computer tools (MS Office, internal platforms) effectively to manage calls and logs

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (college preferred)
  • Fluency in English and Cantonese, with B2+ proficiency or higher
  • Ability to pass language and interpretation assessments
  • Minimum of 6 months of call center, customer service, or interpreting experience
  • Strong verbal communication, bilingual accuracy, and ethical judgment
  • Ability to think clearly and act professionally in fast-paced, emotionally charged situations
  • Strong sense of responsibility, integrity, and time management
  • Comfort with assertive communication and session control
  • Basic computer skills, including typing and MS Office
  • Quiet, distraction-free workspace conducive to active listening
  • Stable internet connection (no cellular data or hotspots)

Identity Qualification

Throughout recruitment and training, candidates must provide valid, government-issued photo identification. Failure to do so will disqualify applicants from consideration and training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in medical, legal, or community interpreting (strong plus)
  • Experience with remote work tools and communication platforms

Remote Work Requirements

  • Quiet, comfortable workspace free from distractions
  • Computer (Windows or Mac) with at least 16GB RAM
  • Broadband internet (minimum 30 Mbps download / 10 Mbps upload)
  • Computer no older than 5 years with functioning webcam
  • Windows 10 or newer / macOS Big Sur (OS 11) or newer

Important Note

This position is remote, but not flexible or 'work-at-your-own-pace.' It involves structured, back-to-back calls from your home workstation. Multitasking or personal tasks during working hours are not permitted. Interpreters must adhere to a variable schedule and remain fully available during shifts, with breaks scheduled by our Workforce Management team .
