Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Assistant Manager of Interpreter Services, this role involves conducting medical and general interpreting/translating for healthcare staff and patients. The interpreter acts as a cultural liaison, advocates for non-English speakers, assesses patient understanding, and keeps medical staff informed. The position also involves recording service details in patient charts and referring patients to appropriate services.
Essential Functions
- Perform medical interpretation in both consecutive and sight translation modes, including in-group settings. Handle simple encounters independently and complex cases with periodic supervision.
- Translate medical documents such as After Visit Summaries, correspondence, and instructions accurately and efficiently, both simple and complex documentation as needed.
- Connect patients and families to hospital resources based on their needs.
- Share observations regarding patient needs with medical staff and social workers to ensure comprehensive care.
- Respond to emergency Code requests, confirming language preferences, and providing interpretation during crisis interventions.
- Arrange interpretation services for various languages, including outsourcing and sign language services, as necessary.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Option 1: Bachelor's degree in translation and interpretation, with no experience required.
- Option 2: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, completion of medical interpreting training accepted by certification boards, and at least one (1) year of interpreting experience.
Knowledge and Skills
- Fluent or near-fluent in English and a non-English language (verbal and written).
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Competence in consecutive interpreting and sight translation.
- Understanding of cultural, health literacy, and perceptual factors affecting communication.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and professionalism.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate sound judgment.
- Calmness under pressure and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively across all organizational levels.
