Position: Teacher
Characteristics of the Class
Under the supervision of the school principal, the teacher is responsible for instructing, monitoring progress, maintaining discipline in assigned classes, and performing related duties as required.
Essential Functions
- Instructional Planning: Develop written lesson plans, prepare instructional materials aligned with program objectives, establish positive learning standards, and evaluate student progress. Maintain accurate records of achievements.
- Instruction Delivery: Apply contemporary learning theories and teaching methodologies, utilize a variety of instructional materials, participate in developing new teaching techniques, and create engaging bulletin boards and interest areas reflecting students’ work.
- Curriculum Knowledge: Demonstrate expertise in subject content and instructional levels; participate in programs aimed at improving student attendance and promoting anti-vandalism initiatives.
- Classroom Management: Establish and enforce reasonable rules of conduct within the classroom and school grounds, including playgrounds, hallways, and lunchrooms, consistent with the Chicago Public Schools’ discipline policies.
- Record Keeping & Student Support: Maintain attendance records and seating charts, foster student self-discipline and positive self-concept, ensure fairness, and demonstrate respect for students. Conduct conferences with parents, guardians, and staff concerning student progress.
- Communication & Collaboration: Communicate regularly with parents and guardians, participate in staff meetings, and utilize community resources. May coordinate and attend field trips and extracurricular activities.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
Successful completion of all student teaching requirements and coursework necessary to earn appropriate Illinois State Board of Education teaching certificates.
License Requirements
Possession of at least one valid Illinois State Board of Education teaching license:
- Professional Educator License (PEL), or
- Educator License with Stipulations (ELS), properly endorsed for this position.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
- Knowledge of subject matter aligned with certification standards.
- Understanding of contemporary teaching principles, classroom management, and student behavior techniques.
- Ability to adapt instruction to diverse student needs and work collaboratively with staff and community members.
- Effective communication skills—both oral and written.
- Strong interpersonal skills and sound professional judgment.
Physical Requirements
Light Work: Ability to exert up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, and a negligible amount constantly. Tasks include occasional stooping, frequent reaching, handling objects, constant talking and hearing, and visual acuity for near and occasional visual tasks.
