Role Overview 📋
Definition: Performs a wide variety of language interpretation activities on an assigned and as-needed basis for the Superior Courts of California, serving parties such as witnesses, defendants, attorneys, court personnel, and the public.
Distinguishing Characteristics: This is a single-level classification. Employees perform both consecutive and simultaneous interpretation of courtroom proceedings, including sight translation (reading written texts and providing oral translations) as needed.
Typical Tasks & Essential Functions 🔧
- Interpret from and into English and the applicable non-English language using simultaneous and consecutive modes during court proceedings and related departments.
- Make sight translations of documents such as court petitions, reports, waivers, disposition statements, and other official papers.
- Interpret for judges, attorneys, court staff, and other court-related departments under court directives.
- Notify the court of any issues that may impede interpretative performance.
- Research and understand specialized court terminology, including legal, technological, scientific, and medical terms.
- Review daily court dockets and assignments, and accurately complete logs and documentation as required.
- Provide basic court information to non-English speaking public and process related interpretation documents.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements 🎓
Licenses & Certifications ✅
- A valid Class "C" driver's license or equivalent, or an alternative method of transportation.
- Possession of a valid Certified Court Interpreter certificate issued by the Judicial Council of California or registration as a Court Interpreter.
Skills & Knowledge 🧠
- Accurately interpret in simultaneous, consecutive, and sight translation modes without editing or summarizing.
- Use correct grammar and vocabulary in both English and the non-English language, assuming correct usage by the source speaker.
- Remain impartial and accurate, even in adversarial or emotionally charged situations.
- Understand legal concepts and forensic terminology in both languages.
- Familiarity with regional and cultural variations and continuous research into language usage.
- Proficiency with office equipment such as computers, telephones, and copiers, including interpretation equipment.
- Adherence to California statutes, Rules of Court, and professional interpretive standards (California Rules of Court Rule 984.4).
- Professional interaction skills, maintaining a cooperative attitude with colleagues and court personnel.
