City of New York Is Hiring A Program Coordinator & Technical Assistance

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is hiring a Community Coordinator to enhance waste management and community outreach efforts within NYC schools, supporting environmental initiatives and public education programs.

About DSNY

DSNY is the nation's largest municipal sanitation agency, dedicated to keeping New York City healthy, safe, and clean through waste collection, recycling, street cleaning, and snow removal. The department employs nearly 10,000 staff across 59 district garages, operating a fleet of over 5,000 trucks, cars, and equipment. It manages approximately 6,500 miles of streets, vacant lots, VAcated vehicles, and enforces programs like the Commercial Waste Zones (CWZ) under Local Law 199 of 2019.

Position: Community Coordinator (56058)

The Community Coordinator will join the Bureau of Strategic Initiatives within the Agency & Building Containerization Unit’s Schools Team, reporting to senior management, and engaging in outreach, program management, data analysis, community engagement, and field operations related to waste management initiatives in schools. The role may require evening or weekend work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct outreach: Engage with NYC schools receiving DSNY services to promote waste management programs.
  • Develop materials: Oversee creation of informational resources, online tools, and public education strategies focused on Recycling and Organics Diversion in schools.
  • Manage digital tools: Handle online workflows, communication platforms, and analyze operational and educational data.
  • Research & evaluate: Assess program implementation and suggest operational improvements.
  • Reporting: Prepare detailed reports and presentations on program progress and research findings.
  • Serve as liaison: Act as a point of contact between the Department and NYC schools.
  • Develop contacts: Build relationships within City government and waste management professionals.
  • Support functions: Assist other Bureau activities as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college plus two years of community work experience, or
  • High school diploma or equivalent plus six years of relevant experience, or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience, with at least one year of experience as detailed above.

Preferred Skills

  • Extensive knowledge of NYC, its schools, and agencies
  • Experience in public outreach for adults and children
  • Knowledge of NYC waste management laws and policies
  • Program development experience for city agencies or institutions
  • Strong communication skills for diverse audiences
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, writing, and data management abilities
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and CRM platforms
  • Multilingual skills in languages such as Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, or Hebrew
  • Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License

Residency Requirement: NYC residency generally required within 90 days of appointment. Certain employees with two continuous years of service may reside in neighboring counties. Discuss specifics at interview.
