Position Overview

The Professional Educator/Teacher assists students in mastering subject matter and essential skills that foster their development into responsible, capable individuals. Integrating best practices, research, and education laws, teachers deliver high-quality, standards-aligned instruction through collaboration with colleagues, families, and administrators.

Teacher Assignment

Student placements are determined based on grade level, subject area, and course requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Planning and Preparation

  • Integrate content knowledge into curricula, establishing connections across topics and concepts.
  • Apply current best practices, research, and legal standards to instructional planning.
  • Understand student characteristics, learning styles, interests, cultural backgrounds, and community context.
  • Set measurable, clearly defined instructional goals suitable for diverse learners.
  • Utilize resources from the school and district to enhance teaching effectiveness.
  • Design coherent lessons and units, including activities, materials, groupings, pacing, and assessments.
  • Assess student learning accurately, communicate assessment criteria, and use results to inform instruction.
  • Support Special Educators in developing standards-based IEPs for eligible students.

Learning Environment

  • Maintain a respectful, inclusive, and safe classroom atmosphere.
  • Establish a culture of learning with high expectations and student pride.
  • Manage classroom procedures, transitions, materials, and non-instructional duties efficiently.
  • Supervise and effectively utilize paraeducators and volunteers.
  • Monitor and manage student behavior with clear expectations and respectful interventions.
  • Develop and implement behavior support plans as needed.
  • Organize classroom resources to ensure accessibility, safety, and engagement.

Instruction

  • Communicate directions and procedures clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Use questioning, discussion, and engagement strategies to promote student participation and comprehension.
  • Adapt lessons flexibly to meet student needs, questions, and interests.
  • Provide timely, accurate feedback to students, families, and colleagues on progress and performance.

Other Professional Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and refine lessons to improve effectiveness.
  • Assist in curriculum planning, program evaluation, and identifying instructional needs.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential student records and submit reports as required.
  • Collaborate with parents, colleagues, and external agencies to support student success.
  • Participate in EST/MTSS processes, including referrals, screenings, and supports.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and district initiatives to enhance skills and content knowledge.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and prioritize student-centered decision-making.
  • Follow school rules, administrative policies, and district guidelines.

Supervision and Evaluation

  • Reports to and is evaluated by the School Principal or Assistant Principal.
  • For grades 9–12: Reports to Department Chair with evaluation input from principal or designee.
  • May receive guidance from the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assist in training, planning, and directing paraeducators' activities.
  • Provide input on paraeducator evaluations, hiring, and employment decisions.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required; knowledge of Vermont Framework of Standards preferred.
  • Recent experience in a Vermont school district is a plus.

Certifications & Licenses

  • Vermont Teaching License or eligibility to obtain one.
  • Appropriate endorsements and meeting core competencies for those endorsements.

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills: interpreting regulations, writing reports, and presenting information effectively. 🎤
  • Strong mathematical abilities and instructional skills.
  • Ability to adapt instruction flexibly to diverse learner needs.
  • Collaborative mindset for working with teams, families, and external agencies.
