Concordia Publishing House Is Hiring A Production Editor, Level II

Position Overview

The Production Editor, Level II, is responsible for executing all production tasks related to the Concordia Commentary series and other assigned products or groups. This includes copyediting, formatting, and maintaining adherence to professional and CPH standards. The role involves close collaboration with the Concordia Commentary Editor, Production Control, and Design teams to ensure the accuracy and excellence of each publication.

Key Responsibilities

  • File Management & Style Application: Place electronic files into commentary templates and apply correct style tags as needed.
  • Language Input & Oversight: Input Greek and Hebrew texts; oversee freelance copyeditors assisting with these tasks.
  • Manuscript Review: Read and evaluate manuscript development for:
    • Scriptural and LCMS doctrinal conformity
    • House and commentary style adherence
    • Grammar and spelling correctness
    • Clarity and organization
    • Factual accuracy and sourcing
    • Artwork, maps, and diagrams placement
  • Fact Checking & Copyright: Verify quotes and references, checking copyright information when possible.
  • Communication & Problem Solving: Discuss issues and substantive changes with the Concordia Commentary Editor; review and respond to author comments.
  • Electronic Layout & Formatting: Insert edited manuscript into layout files, ensuring all content, queries, and concerns are resolved. Add marginal icons as indicated.
  • Greek & Hebrew Edits: Make language-specific changes within electronic layout files.
  • Index Preparation: Oversee and edit the indexes for accuracy and consistency.
  • Proofreading & Quality Assurance: Review printer's proofs for the commentary body to ensure quality.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Knowledge:
    • Scripture and LCMS doctrine
    • Biblical Hebrew and Greek
    • English grammar and usage
    • Accessing and utilizing reference materials (books, Internet)
  • Skills:
    • Writing and editing for clarity
    • Exegetical writing and critical analysis
    • Researching facts via references and the Internet
    • Applying grammatical and style rules
    • Using Greek and Hebrew fonts proficiently
    • Effective written communication
    • Working tactfully and cooperatively to meet deadlines
    • Proficiency with Adobe InDesign
    • Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook)

Educational & Experience Requirements

  • Degrees: Master of Divinity (M.Div.) or equivalent from an LCMS seminary or partner seminary.
  • Experience: Minimum of four years in theological editing and/or writing, ideally within a publishing environment.
  • Language Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in biblical languages (Hebrew and Greek).
  • Theological Commitment: Strong knowledge of and dedication to LCMS doctrine.
