Help make a difference in the lives of cancer patients by providing emotional and practical support through our bilingual volunteer program.
About Shanti Cancer Program
Shanti Cancer Program offers vital emotional and practical assistance to individuals battling life-threatening cancer. We are seeking bilingual volunteers (English with Cantonese and/or Mandarin proficiency) to support our clients by offering a listening ear and daily assistance.
Who We Need
- Volunteers fluent in Cantonese and/or Mandarin
- Must be 18 years or older
- Willing to undergo training conducted in English
Please note: Training is entirely in English but aimed at preparing you to support clients with diverse needs and backgrounds.
Volunteer Responsibilities
- Complete the internationally-recognized Shanti Model of Peer Support training
- Be matched 1-on-1 with a client to provide companionship, listen supportively, and offer light practical help
- Join a community of compassionate volunteers and staff
Time Commitment
We ask for a commitment of 2 hours a week for at least 6 months. Opportunities to visit clients are flexible, often scheduled on weekends or evenings. Additionally, volunteers are encouraged to attend monthly support group meetings.
Upcoming Volunteer Training
The next in-person training session will take place at our 27 Maiden Lane, San Francisco office from June 12-14, 2026. This intensive training will equip you with essential skills to work effectively with isolated individuals or those living with serious illnesses and disabilities.
The training covers:
- The challenges faced by clients
- Communication and listening skills through interactive exercises
Many volunteers find the training to be a rewarding community-building experience.
