The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is a vital agency dedicated to keeping NYC clean, safe, and healthy through waste collection, recycling, street cleaning, and snow removal. They are seeking a dedicated Community Coordinator to join their team and support various community-focused waste management initiatives.

About DSNY

DSNY is the nation's largest municipal sanitation agency, with nearly 10,000 employees, 59 district garages, and a fleet of over 5,000 trucks, cars, and equipment. The department manages approximately 6,500 miles of streets, clears litter, snow, and ice, and handles debris and abandoned vehicles across NYC.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct outreach to NYC agencies, schools, and nonprofits receiving DSNY services
  • Assign work to support staff based on priorities and track project progress
  • Manage online tools, workflow, and communications related to recycling programs
  • Gather and analyze operational and educational data regularly
  • Oversee vendor relationships and review invoices for accuracy
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations on program status and research findings
  • Serve as a liaison with NYC agencies, schools, non-profits, and residential building staff
  • Support other bureau functions as needed; may require evening or weekend work

Minimum Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of relevant community work experience, OR
  • High school diploma or equivalent and six years of relevant community work experience, OR
  • Equivalent education and/or experience, with at least one year of experience as described above

Preferred Skills

  • Extensive knowledge of NYC, its agencies, and operations 🏙️
  • Experience in public outreach and education
  • Strong understanding of NYC waste management and containerization laws
  • Experience developing compliance programs for NYC institutions
  • Proven ability to manage teams and direct staff work
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to tailor messages to diverse audiences
  • Strong organizational, administrative, interpersonal, and data management skills
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and CRM platforms
  • Fluency in a foreign language such as Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, or Hebrew 🗣️
  • Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license 🚗

Residency Requirement: NYC residency within 90 days of appointment. Some eligibility for residents of Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County after two years of city service. Discuss residency with your interview representative.

Salary Range

$62,868.00 – $97,593.00
