Compensation

The starting hourly wage ranges from $19.88. This amount does not include additional compensation such as bonuses or overtime.

📝 Role Overview

The Medical Scribe at Oak Street Health plays a crucial role in supporting primary care providers by handling clinical documentation, allowing providers to focus on delivering exceptional patient care. Responsibilities include observing patient visits, documenting encounters, assigning codes, and supporting clinical improvement efforts.

Internally known as CISs (Clinic Informatics Specialists), Scribes serve as vital members of the care team, becoming experts in our value-based care model, managing chronic conditions documentation, and helping identify care gaps through specialized training.

This position offers a fantastic opportunity for pre-med students, recent graduates, or those pursuing careers in health informatics, public health, healthcare administration, or medical coding, with a commitment of at least 1-2 years.

Responsibilities

  • Patient Encounter Documentation (80%)
    • Join provider during patient visits to observe and document in real time
    • Record patient history, assessment, plan, and physical exams
    • Assign CPT and ICD-10 codes
    • Prepare after-visit summaries
    • Collaborate with providers to ensure clarity and accuracy in documentation
  • Clinical Documentation Improvement (10%)
    • Review and request medical records
    • Support population health initiatives and clinical reviews
    • Identify documentation opportunities with providers
  • Administrative Support (10%)
    • Place orders and referrals
    • Assist with various team tasks
    • Support provider and care team as needed

What We're Looking For

Knowledge

  • Medical terminology, medications, or experience from shadowing/volunteering
  • Previous scribe or transcription experience preferred

Skills

  • Excellent listening and communication skills
  • Strong computer literacy and ability to learn new systems
  • Fluency in Spanish, Polish, Russian, or other languages spoken in our communities

Abilities

  • Quickly adapt to new workflows and concepts
  • Type 70+ words per minute
  • Work well within a team and follow instructions
  • Be a self-starter within your role
  • Maintain excellent attendance and in-person availability at clinics
  • Commit to at least 1 year (preferably 2+)
  • Work approximately 40-45 hours weekly during clinic hours
  • Adhere to policies including HIPAA and possess US work authorization

Additional Details

  • Expected Weekly Hours: 40
  • Time Type: Full time
  • Pay Range: $17.00 – $34.15/hour

The actual salary offer depends on experience, education, location, and other factors. Role may include bonuses or incentives.
