Position Overview: Mandarin Linguist

Location: Washington, DC (onsite/hybrid)
Duration: Multi-year contract
Start Date: ASAP
Security Clearance: Active DHS Public Trust or we can process for one
Travel: Onsite, with potential travel support internationally and domestically

Job Summary

We are seeking a Subject Matter Expert in interpretation, translation, and transcription of various foreign language materials related to cybercrime investigations. This includes media articles, online communications, chats, emails, audio, and video files.

The successful candidate will review and perform detailed translations of financial documents tied to illicit digital assets, cryptocurrency platforms, and online money laundering schemes. They will utilize diverse open source, commercial, and government databases for research on online threat actors and relevant artifacts, aiding investigators and analysts.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage proactive research assignments focused on foreign language areas of interest to investigations, including emerging illicit financial platforms.
• Summarize translated foreign language materials succinctly to facilitate investigation prioritization.
• Participate in interviews with foreign-speaking sources, informants, defendants, and law enforcement partners, providing consecutive interpretation as needed.
• Serve as a recognized foreign language expert within the organization, supporting investigative teams with language analysis and translation expertise.
• Contribute to building a Language Specialist program, including interview candidate evaluations, protocol development, and strategy planning tailored to cybercrime focus areas.

Technical Skills & Work Experience

Technical Skills: Basic Office software communication tools.

Work Experience:

• 2-5 years providing translation services in the specified language.
• Experience working with law enforcement analysts or investigative tools (preferred).
• Experience supporting US Government investigations through translation (preferred).

Educational & Certification Requirements

• Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) preferred.
• Proficiency in Mandarin with advanced reading, writing, and listening skills, generally at or above DLPT 2+, ACTFL Advanced High, or ILR 2+ levels. Flexibility may be considered.
• Ability to pass a language proficiency exam if required.
