The Department of Linguistics and Asian/Middle Eastern Languages within the College of Arts and Letters is inviting applications to build a diverse pool of part-time lecturers skilled in various language and linguistics fields.
Position Overview
We are seeking prospective temporary faculty with expertise or experience in the following areas:
- Linguistics or related fields
- ESL Composition or related fields
- Asian/Middle Eastern Languages including Arabic, Chinese, Filipino, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Persian, or related disciplines
Appointment Details
Temporary teaching appointments may be full- or part-time, with assignments often made shortly before the semester begins. The key academic terms are:
- Fall Semester: Mid-August to late December
- Spring Semester: Mid-January to mid-May
- Summer Sessions: Opportunities may also be available
Initial appointments generally span one semester or an academic year, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and ongoing need. Applications remain active in our pool throughout the academic year.
Qualifications & Criteria
- Graduate degree preferred in Linguistics or related fields, ESL Composition, or Asian/Middle Eastern Languages
- University teaching experience
- Currency and proficiency in the subject matter

Compensation & Salary Ranges 💰
Initial rank and salary depend on experience and education. Most new hires start at the Lecturer A or B level. Salary classifications as of July 2023 include:
- Lecturer A: $5,007 - $6,359
- Lecturer B: $5,925 - $12,594
- Lecturer C: $6,500 - $13,831
- Lecturer D: $8,184 - $14,487

Applicants must disclose any final administrative or judicial decisions related to sexual harassment within the past seven years, in accordance with Education Code 89521. Disclosures are reviewed by the Center for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination.
The position is considered a mandated reporter under California law, requiring compliance with CSU Executive Order 1083. A satisfactory background check, including criminal records, is mandatory prior to employment.
