This position offers an exciting opportunity to serve within the DoD Cyber Excepted Service, providing critical communication and translation support in a highly specialized environment.

About the Position

This role is a DoD Cyber Excepted Service (CES) personnel system position classified under 10 USC 1599f. Employees in CES positions are part of the Exempted Service and are required to adhere to U.S. Code, Title 10, along with Department of Defense Instruction 1400.25. The position is based with the US Army Signal Activity at Fort Detrick, Maryland.

Responsibilities

  • Operate within a telecommunications station as a Language Specialist, working on rotating shifts to ensure continuous voice and data communications, 24/7 🕑
  • Utilize standard linguistics patterns and specialized military, technical, and scientific terminology to translate documents and information 📝
  • Assist technical personnel with installation, repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance of station equipment and systems ⚙️
  • Perform intensive research to determine precise meanings of specialized terminology, selecting the most appropriate technical words and phrases to preserve original intent 🔍
  • Conduct activities related to station operations and maintenance, including routine Preventative Maintenance Checks and Services on station equipment 🛠️
  • Develop reports and coordinate with command, other agencies, and stakeholders regarding station performance and operations 📊

Requirements & Conditions of Employment

Qualifications

Experience

Qualified candidates must have at least one year of specialized experience demonstrating skills in:

  • Translating and interpreting complex technical material between Russian and English
  • Editing technical translations from Russian to English or vice versa
  • Assisting with the development of technical reports or research

This experience may include paid, unpaid, or volunteer work, including service in programs like Peace Corps or AmeriCorps. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.

Education

  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Russian or English language studies from an accredited institution, or
  • Three full years of graduate-level education in translation or interpreting involving English and Russian languages

Combination of Education and Experience

A combination of coursework and experience can also qualify, calculated as follows:

  • Divide total months of experience by 12
  • Divide graduate semester hours beyond the second year (minus 36) by 18
  • Add the two percentages to reach at least 100%

Foreign Education

Additional Information

  • Current federal employees will be placed on an excepted appointment
