Kumi Is Hiring A Japanese Language Data Validator

Join Kumiai's innovative Japanese learning platform team as a Japanese Language Data Validator (Temporary, Remote) — an exciting opportunity to contribute to shaping personalized language education. 🌏✨

About Kumiai

Kumiai is developing a new kind of Japanese learning experience — one that adapts to how each learner thinks, moving beyond simple vocabulary drills. Based in Houston and New York, our small, tech-driven team is currently in closed beta and working swiftly to enhance our platform.

The Role

We are seeking a qualified Japanese language specialist for a one-time contract to review and validate a large dataset of Japanese language content. The focus is primarily on grammar — including patterns, explanations, usage notes, and example sentences — and extends to the broader vocabulary and structural elements that support effective learning.

What You Will Do

  • Review our Japanese grammar content for linguistic accuracy: pattern descriptions, usage explanations, formality levels, and sentence correctness
  • Audit our content taxonomy and labeling conventions against standard pedagogical frameworks such as JLPT and Genki/Minna curricula
  • Validate a stratified sample of entries across difficulty levels (N5 through N1)
  • Deliver a detailed review report outlining findings, suggested corrections, and a methodology sign-off
  • Optional: Flag systemic issues in content generation and recommend improvements to enhance future data quality

Ideal Candidate

  • Native or near-native proficiency in Japanese, with formal credentials such as a PhD in Japanese linguistics, language education, or applied linguistics — OR extensive curriculum development experience (e.g., textbook contributor, university instructor)
  • Knowledge of JLPT grammar curriculum (N5–N1 patterns)
  • Comfort working with structured data (content provided in clean, readable formats; no database access needed)
  • Exceptional clarity and precision in written English for the review report
  • Ability to work independently and asynchronously

Logistics & Compensation

  • Work Location: Remote, flexible — work from anywhere 🌎
  • Estimated Commitment: 20–30 hours in total
  • Timeline: Completion within 4–6 weeks from start date
  • Rate: Competitive project-based fee (to be discussed during screening)
  • Opportunity: Potential ongoing role as a part-time language advisor for the right candidate
