On-Call Interpreter 📞🌐

Join a dynamic team where your language skills can make a meaningful impact! We're seeking dependable and experienced on-call interpreters fluent in English and Punjabi to support NYC school districts in various settings.

Position Overview

As an On-Call Interpreter, you'll provide critical language support during peak periods, special projects, or to cover staff absences. The role is versatile and can be performed on-site or remotely, offering flexibility to your schedule. You'll assist students, teachers, and parents by facilitating clear communication across cultural and language barriers.

Key Skills & Qualifications

• Effective Communication: Ability to professionally, concisely, and accurately interpret spoken and written language between English and Punjabi.
• Language Fluency: Native-level proficiency in both English and Punjabi.
• Technological Proficiency: Experience with Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and other remote communication tools.
• Time Management: Capable of maintaining schedules and completing tasks promptly.
• Adherence to Policies: Following guidelines established by the language service agency.
• Experience: A minimum of three years providing professional language services is preferred.

Interpreter Responsibilities

• Attend in-person and/or remote meetings between parents, students, and school staff to facilitate understanding.
• Interpret accurately, capturing the tone and intent of the original speaker.
• Recognize that some idioms, slang, or cultural concepts may not translate precisely.
• Assist with written and oral communication tasks as required.

Additional Responsibilities

• Translate conversations and documents faithfully, conveying tone and meaning.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, including students, parents, and staff.
• Manage multiple assignments and calendars efficiently to meet deadlines.
• Engage with clients virtually, via phone, or in person, ensuring timely and effective communication.
• Participate in ongoing professional development and expand educational vocabulary.

Qualifications

• Fluent in speaking, writing, and reading both English and Punjabi.
• Proven experience interpreting and translating in both languages.
• Willingness and ability to travel to school sites within NYC.
• Capability to work remotely with reliable Wi-Fi and necessary equipment.
• Availability Monday through Friday for job assignments.
