Role Overview

As an On-Call Interpreter, you will assist students, teachers, and parents by facilitating clear and accurate communication during peak times, special projects, or to cover absences. You’ll be working in various school settings throughout NYC school districts, providing vital language services.

Ideal Candidate Skills & Qualifications

• Communication: Professionally, concisely, and accurately convey messages across cultures in both verbal and written English and Punjabi.
• Fluency: Native-level proficiency in both English and Punjabi.
• Technological Proficiency: Comfortable using Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and other remote communication tools.
• Time Management: Effectively manage your schedule and complete tasks on time.
• Policy Adherence: Follow the guidelines provided by the language service agency.
• Experience: At least three years of professional language service experience is preferred.

Key Responsibilities

• Attend in-person or remote meetings to interpret conversations between parents, students, and school staff, ensuring understanding and meaning are conveyed accurately.
• Interpret with clarity and precision, maintaining the tone and intent of the original speaker.
• Recognize that idioms, slang, and cultural nuances may not translate directly between languages.
• Assist with written and oral communication tasks as needed.

Main Duties

• Interpret and translate spoken and written communication, capturing the original tone and intent.
• Build strong relationships with clients, including parents, students, and staff.
• Manage your schedule efficiently to meet deadlines and fulfill assignments.
• Engage with clients virtually, over the phone, or in person, ensuring prompt and clear communication.
• Continuously expand your educational vocabulary and participate in professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

• Fluent in English and Punjabi, with strong reading, writing, and speaking skills.
• Proven experience interpreting and translating in both languages.
• Ability to travel to school sites within NYC.
• Reliable remote working setup with strong Wi-Fi and necessary equipment.
• Availability to accept assignments Monday through Friday.
